2011-12 budget decisions and update

The chancellor and provost announced today that they have exempted the Academic and Staff Assistance Program from budget reductions and agreed to maintain child care subsidies for at least one more year. Today's update also states that the campus is on target to meet its goals for nonresident tuition and summer session revenue, and is making good progress on efficiencies. [ More… ]

UC presses its message in D.C. and Sacramento

Government relations executives Marj Dickinson of the Davis campus and Bob Waste of the UC Davis Health System took part this week in UC Day in D.C., where UC leaders met with members of Congress and their staffs to talk up the importance of UC's partnerships with the federal government. On the state front, Russell Gould, outgoing chair of the Board of Regents, called on California lawmakers to find the political will to make support for UC a priority. [ More… ]

Roundabout to be built along Old Davis Road

The campus's south entry is getting a roundabout, to be built this summer to ease traffic congestion and improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety at Old Davis Road and California Avenue. A detour is planned during the project's first phase, July 5 to Aug. 14, and drivers should continue to expect delays for another month after that. See maps of the project site and detour. [ More… ]

Clinical and Translational Science Center awarded $20 million

The UC Davis Clinical and Translational Science Center, which has advanced research and provided critical training to UC Davis scholars and students during the past five years, has received renewed grant funding of $20 million from the National Center for Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health. General Mills grant will help vanilla farmers and tropical forests

A UC Davis scientist will receive $200,000 from General Mills, a global food company, in support of genomic research for crop improvement of vanilla and its sustainable cultivation in Madagascar. [ More… ]

Catch a glimpse — and a whiff — of rare, giant flower

If you've always wanted to see one of the campus's rare corpse flowers in bloom, today is your day. "Ted the Titan's" giant bloom opened yesterday, releasing a stinky odor that attracts pollinating flies and curious visitors alike. The UC Davis Botanical Conservatory plans to stay open today until 9 p.m. so people can see and smell the plant before it fades. UC Davis testing new stem cell procedure for bone fractures

A method for producing a type of natural stem-cell "grout" that can be used to treat patients whose fractured bones fail to fully heal is being tested as part of a clinical trial by UC Davis orthopaedic surgeons. And a national study led by UC Davis researchers has shown that a gel that creates a watertight seal to close surgical wounds provides a significant advance in the treatment of patients following spinal procedures. Pink Martini, described as "genre-hopping and über-hip," draws inspiration from jazz, classical and pop music as well as romantic Hollywood musicals of the 1940s and '50s. The Mondavi Center has announced that Storm Large, who shot to national prominence as a finalist on CBS Television's Rock Star: Supernova in 2006, will substitute as the band's featured vocalist.
