UC applauds governor's budget veto

California Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a state spending plan yesterday that would have deepened the cut in financial support for the University of California by another $150 million for the coming fiscal year. The university already is enacting painful measures to absorb a cut of $500 million, and UC President Mark Yudof and Board of Regents Chairman Russell Gould sent Brown a letter, just prior to the veto, urging him to reject additional cuts. Two plant biologists win fellowships to help feed the planet

Two UC Davis plant biologists have been selected among the first-ever class of HHMI-GBMF Investigators, funded jointly by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Simon Chan, assistant professor in the Department of Plant Biology, and Jorge Dubcovsky, professor in the Department of Plant Sciences, are among 15 recipients nationwide of the new awards program, to be supported with $75 million over the next five years. UC Davis researchers discover target molecule to repair injured nerve cells

A team of investigators at UC Davis and Shriners Hospital have discovered that a factor in the embryonic development of brain cells is an important target for developing new drugs and stem cell therapies to treat patients who have lost function from multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, stroke and other "demyelinating" diseases and injuries. Professor Andy Frank recognized as 'father of the plug-in hybrid'

Engineering professor Andrew Frank was honored this week at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., as one of Automotive News' first-ever "Electrifying 100" — the most influential people behind the electric vehicle movement. Frank developed what may have been the first plug-in hybrid car at UC Davis in 1972, and his students have become famous in college engineering circles for being the only team that brought hybrids to Detroit car-of-the-future competitions. Saturdays, July 16 and Aug. 13, 7:30 p.m., the Quad

The Mondavi Center's SummerMusic series on the UC Davis Quad is free and open to people of all ages. This year's lineup includes the Cajun sounds of Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys on July 16, and the Indian rhythms of Non Stop Bhangra on Aug. 13.
