Defining the future of UC Davis
The chancellor's office has set up an e-mail address — future@ucdavis.edu — for comments on Chancellor Katehi's July 22 letter on "defining the future of UC Davis." In light of permanent reductions in state funding, she offered a plan by which the campus could control its own destiny — by boosting enrollment. She noted that the campus's physical footprint is large enough and the infrastructure is in place to accommodate more undergraduate and graduate students — and this can help make the campus financially stable, while at the same time supporting up to 300 new tenure-track faculty positions. Ph.D. student leads science camp for teens who are blind like him
Hoby Wedler recalls a high school teacher telling him that Wedler's blindness would keep him from pursuing chemistry. Now Wedler is a doctoral student in that very subject at UC Davis, and leading a summer camp for other blind and otherwise visually impaired students, teaching them to design experiments based on touch and smell. Autopsies reveal characteristic brain changes in athletes
The brain damage found in a growing number of professional football players has been described in detail by a UC Davis Medical Center researcher and colleagues in the July issue of Neurosurgery. The pattern of protein tangles and plaques in chronic traumatic encephalopathy is distinct from those in Alzheimer's patients, they report, pointing the way toward an objective diagnosis of the disease.
