Two law professors have created a colorful way to connect the story of a World War II-era civil rights hero to today's multicultural generation of Californians. Fred Korematsu: All American Hero, depicts a young Muslim American girl's struggles with her identity and how she learns from Korematsu's courageous example. California celebrates its first Korematsu Day on Sunday, and the law school has two events planned Feb. 2 and 23. [ More… ]

A call for budget IDEAS

How can we generate more revenue? What can we do to be more efficient? Where can we cut costs? Come Monday, you will find a preliminary IDEAS list on the campus's budget website. The IDEAS list is only a starting point, to spur discussion among members of the campus community. Campus leaders are asking you to comment on the IDEAS you see and to offer up your own suggestions and recommendations for this discussion. As you review the IDEAS list, keep in mind last week's budget planning letter: "We can no longer build our budgets on the budgets of prior years. We require a new paradigm that maintains our mission of teaching, research and public service in this new, more turbulent fiscal environment." Shared service center: Now the real work begins

"All of our work to date has been about laying the foundation for implementation," says Lisa Terry of the Shared Services Implementation Team. That changes Monday, with the official launch, not of the center itself, but the detailed work of creating it — by subject matter experts from each participating administrative unit, and from central units. The center's first department, which will process payroll, is expected to be operational in about six months. [ More… ]

Student pleads not guilty in weapons case, stays in jail

An attorney for UC Davis student Nicholas Benson entered not guilty pleas Jan. 26 on his client's behalf, saying he "was more of a danger to himself than to others" when city of Davis police arrested him on weapons charges last Friday. After his arraignment in Yolo County Superior Court, the 25-year-old Benson went back to jail, held in lieu of $1 million bail. [ More… ]

Campus toasts new sustainable winery, brewery, foods complex and $3 million gift

Joined by hundreds of friends, supporters and alumni, UC Davis officially opened the doors today to the world's most environmentally sophisticated facility for making wine, brewing beer and processing foods. The campus also announced a $3 million gift by Jess Jackson and Barbara R. Banke of Jackson Family Wines to construct the Jess S. Jackson Sustainable Winery Building, which will house the technology needed to maximize the environmental capabilities of the new complex. [ More… ]

Mellon Foundation awards $1.48 million for humanities research

UC Davis has been awarded $1.48 million from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support research in the humanities over the next seven years. The grant is the largest single award to UC Davis from the 41-year-old foundation, the largest philanthropic organization with a dedicated commitment to supporting the humanities and the arts in higher education. Symposium 'completely re-envisioned' for graduate and professional school students

It has a new name, an expanded program and new cash prizes ranging up to $5,000. It is the Interdisciplinary Graduate and Professional Student Symposium, and the Office of Graduate Studies is now taking applications from students who wish to participate. The deadline is Feb. 9. The organizers said the symposium has been "completely re-envisioned ... to better showcase the impressive research of the UC Davis graduate student body and incorporate a wider spectrum of both graduate and professional students." IET steps up its fight against spam. ... Nima Arkani-Hamed, one of the world's top theoretical physicists, will be here Feb. 2 to give a talk, "Space-Time, Quantum Mechanics and the Large Hadron Collider." ... The Student Employment Center invites nominations for student employee of the year. ... And Student Affairs has called for nominations for two sets of awards: outstanding graduating seniors and leadership awards for juniors. [ More… ]

Study finds greenhouse gas emissions can hurt companies' stock value

How much greenhouse gas a company produces has a significant effect on the value of the company's stock, according to a new study by researchers at UC Davis, UC Berkeley and University of Otago in New Zealand. The greater the carbon emissions, the lower a company's stock, all other factors being equal, the researchers found. [ More… ]

In memoriam: Nancy Seyden and Shirley Goldman

Nancy Seyden, who, as a student and employee from 1967 to 2008 played a key role in transforming UC Davis' attitude about people with disabilities, died Jan. 22 at the age of 63. ... Shirley Goldman, lecturer emerita in mathematics and former associate dean of the College of Letters and Science, died Dec. 12 at the age of 80. [ More… ]
