Campus leaders join Yudof in addressing budget woes

Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and Provost Ralph J. Hexter propose a new set of budget planning principles as the campus deals with the potential loss of $73 million in state funding, UC Davis' estimated share of a $500 million cut to the UC system. More than 250 people visited the UC Davis West Village residential leasing office during its first two weeks of business. … Registration opens Feb. 1 for the 2011 AdMan Mid-Management Conference, to be held March 9. The theme is "From Survival to Success: Change = Opportunity." … The Academic and Staff Assistance Program is launching a new meditation group, free of charge, for staff and faculty of all meditation levels, from beginner to advanced. Text rentals save students $388,000 in a single quarter

The UC Davis Bookstore says its textbook rental program saved students more than $388,000 in fall quarter. Jason Lorgan, associate director of the bookstore, said text rental fees can save students up to 70 percent off what they would pay for new books — which "helps make college a little more affordable for our students." UC Davis study shows plants moved downhill, not up, in warming world

In a paper published this week in the journal Science, a UC Davis researcher and his co-authors challenge a widely held assumption that plants will move uphill in response to warmer temperatures. The study reveals that other factors, such as precipitation, may be more important than temperature in defining a species' habitable range. [ More… ]

IET grateful for support during power upgrade, grading audit

In a recent open letter to faculty, students and staff, Vice Provost Pete Siegel expressed gratitude for their support of the Davis Campus Data Center shutdown in December. Siegel, who heads Information and Educational Technology, also recognized the registrar's office and the Academic Senate for their work in December with IET on a technical audit of SmartSite's GradeBook feature. Bags Across the Globe lecture, reception

Sunday, Jan. 23, 1:30 p.m., Technocultural Studies Building

A tornado has touched down in the Design Museum. The tornado is made from more than 1,000 plastic bags — symbolizing how bags like these "are causing serious environmental problems" all over the world, said Ann Savageau, associate professor of design and curator of the exhibit. Her lecture is set for 1:30 p.m., and a reception follows at 2:30 p.m. Both are free and open to the public. [ More… ]

They wrote about the Twilight mystique, and they are scheduled to talk about it next week in a UC Davis Bookstore event. The seven participants — including six faculty members — contributed to the recently published The Twilight Mystique: Critical Essays on the Novels and Films. And next month, the bookstore is bringing in Pulitzer Prize winner Gary Snyder, professor emeritus of English, for a program about a new book titled The Nature of This Place. He wrote several pieces in the book, as well as the foreword. [ More… ]
