W.M. Keck Foundation awards two $1 million grants to UC Davis
The W.M. Keck Foundation has awarded $2 million in grants to UC Davis for research on cell mechanics and the genetics of common diseases. Gang-Yu Liu and Ian Kennedy received $1 million to develop a new instrument for measuring the mechanics of single cells, while David Segal was awarded $1 million to take a novel approach to identifying genetic changes associated with heart disease. Chancellor's fellows: The title is theirs for five years
They are not due to be formally recognized until March, but the title is already theirs to keep for the next five years: Chancellor's Fellow. They are the newest class, the class of 2011-12, faculty members who are being honored early in their careers, for having already compiled outstanding records of achievement. Each fellow receives a $25,000 prize. The 2011-12 fellows, all associate professors, are: Simona Ghetti of psychology, Stacey Harmer of plant biology, Yiyun Li of English, Xin Liu of computer science, Alexander Revzin of biomedical engineering, Kurt Rohde of music and Qing-zhu Yin, geology. The arts: Rosen receives Painters and Sculptors Grant
Art professor Annabeth Rosen, who holds the Robert Arneson Chair in Ceramic Sculpture, is among 25 recipients of $25,000 awards in the 2011 Painters and Sculptors Grant Program. … Peter Shahrokh, an analyst at Design and Construction Management, contributes the cover art for the December edition of Academic Medicine, the journal of the American Association of Medical Colleges. UC Davis West Village, planned as a zero net energy community, is showcased in new video as one of the ways in which California is adapting to its environment. The state produced the adaptation strategies video for Gov. Jerry Brown's recent conference on extreme climate risks and California's future, held at the California Academy of Sciences. Search for university librarian begins anew
UC Davis has relaunched its search for a university librarian after redefining the position to focus on leading the library's integration of digital resources and information technology to serve the academic community into the future. According to the revised job description, the new university librarian will be "responsible for transforming the General Library into an 'academic hub' that promotes the effective and innovative use of digital information resources in discovery and learning for the future." Chancellor's Colloquium: Sciences academy leader to give address
The Chancellor's Colloquium Distinguished Speakers Series is set to continue Tuesday, Jan. 10, with Ralph Cicerone, president of the National Academy of Sciences and chair of the National Research Council. His address is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. An online system is accepting reservations for this free event. [ More… ]
