Merit-based pay due for eligible faculty, nonrepresented staff
President Mark G. Yudof on Aug. 17 authorized a one-year, merit-based system of pay raises for faculty and nonrepresented staff members. He called the raises for faculty a tool to recruit and, most importantly, retain leading academics who are increasingly being courted by competing institutions. As for nonrepresented staff, "Fairness dictates that we take this step," said Yudof, noting that many employees are working longer hours in this budget-troubled time and have not been given merit or cost-of-living raises in nearly four years. Annual philanthropic support for UC Davis tops $117 million
Donors committed more than $117.6 million in philanthropic support to UC Davis during the 2010-11 fiscal year, surpassing last year's total of $112.3 million and marking the fifth year in a row that contributions exceeded $100 million. [ More… ]
Sandstone to come down for leak fix at Mondavi Center
The curtain is going up on a big show outside the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. In this case, the curtain is scaffolding all along the building's south wall, from the ground to the roof. Workers will be removing all of the sandstone — an estimated 50,000 tiles — to repair the waterproofing underneath. The project is expected to last into December. Shared service center: Director appointed
Associate Vice Chancellor Karen Hull announced the hiring of Andrew Dunn as director of the shared service center that is now being developed for the Davis campus. "Andrew is a strong leader and visionary in the area of shared services, with a strong commitment to customer service, continuous process improvement and development of employees within the SSC," said Hull, who leads Human Resources and the shared service center project. Sierra magazine says we're still cool (and greener!)
UC Davis is greener and cooler this year, moving into the top 10 of Sierra magazine's annual ranking of the "greenest" colleges in the United States. UC Davis earned the eighth spot, up from 16 a year ago, on the magazine's list of the "Coolest Schools" in the country. [ More… ]
Aggie Lager 'carries our name with pride'
UC Davis, a world leader in brewing science and education, and Sudwerk Restaurant & Brewery of Davis have entered into a licensing agreement that will offer Aggie Lager on tap at Davis eateries and generate an estimated $25,000 a year for scholarships. "Aggie Lager is an exceptional lager that shows off the brewing talents of our alumni and carries our name with pride," said Charlie Bamforth, the Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences. Sacramento Bee profiles the School of Law's new immigration expert
Law professor Gabriel "Jack" Chin, a national voice in the debate over undocumented immigrants, is leaving the University of Arizona for UC Davis, saying he and his wife did not want to raise their daughters in Arizona, where Chin vigorously challenged Senate Bill 1070, considered the toughest immigration law in the country.
