Engineers pumped up about biomechanics of riding bikes
UC Davis mechanical and aerospace engineers aren't just reinventing the wheel. They hope to reinvent the whole bike with new designs that make it easier to ride for balance-challenged folks. "We'd like to know what makes a bicycle hard to ride, and can we make it easier," said Mont Hubbard, a co-investigator with fellow professor Ron Hess in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Knoepfler, associate professor of cell biology and human anatomy, has published a roadmap for overcoming the obstacles to developing stem cells from adult cells — a breakthrough that could one day treat conditions as diverse as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and cancer, while avoiding the controversial use of embryonic stem cells. Walker renovation to clear path for classroom, promenade
Recent demolition work on the south side of Walker Hall gave new life to an old rumor — that one of the campus's oldest buildings was being torn down. The truth is, the recent demolition took down a small structure known as the Walker Hall annex, as well as a stucco wall along Hutchison Drive. The Sacramento and Davis campuses host free, family-friendly concerts. The Sacramento event features Wonder Bread 5, playing dance favorites from the 1960s through today, plus a children's zone with games, bounce houses, crafts and other activities.
