Picnic Day 'Rewind' Photo: Dachshund

It's time for a Picnic Day "Rewind" — back to the days when events like the Doxie Derby stole the headlines. The opening ceremony is set for 9:30 a.m. tomorrow (April 16), and the parade steps off at 10 — with Mark Champagne and Jim Sochor as the marshals. Our coverage includes a list of marshals going back to 1962. Also, Picnic Day will bring quite a show from campus arts programs. [ More… ]

Laurels: Katehi receives American Hellenic Council award

The American Hellenic Council of California presented its 2011 Aristeio Award in Academics to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi last weekend. … Plus, other honors for faculty and staff. … UC Davis received a $500,000 grant from the Bilinski Educational Foundation, which will enable the College of Letters and Science to offer dissertation fellowships in six of its top-ranked programs in the Division of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies and the Division of Social Sciences. The eyes have it: Some dinosaurs were nocturnal

The movie Jurassic Park got one thing right: Those velociraptors hunted by night while the big plant-eaters browsed around the clock, according to a new study of the eyes of fossil animals. This conclusion overturns the conventional wisdom that dinosaurs were active by day while early mammals scurried around at night, said Ryosuke Motani, professor of geology and co-author of the paper. Imported olive oil quality unreliable, study finds

Nearly three-quarters of the samples of top-selling imported olive oil brands failed international extra virgin standards, according to a new report by researchers at UC Davis and in Australia. [ More… ]

Mondavi Center announces Aggie Arts internships

The Mondavi Center this week announced the new Aggie Arts internship program for UC Davis students who are interested in learning firsthand what goes into running a performing arts center. The paid internships, contingent on grant funding, will focus on four major aspects of arts administration: programing, marketing, fundraising and arts education. [ More… ]

Jennifer Beeman pleaded no contest April 14 to two felony counts of embezzlement and keeping false accounts, in connection with her former employment as director of the Campus Violence Prevention Program. … The Center for Watershed Sciences has organized a brown bag session with three of the UC Davis authors of the new book Managing California's Water: From Conflict to Reconciliation. … Registration is under way for C-STEM Day, a free program for kindergarten-through-12th-grade educators, students and parents — to learn about the challenges of teaching the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and math) and about the possibilities for success in those fields. Announcements: Office of Corporate Relations; Dickson Emeriti Professorship Award

The new Office of Corporate Relations will report to the Office of Research, instead of University Relations. Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi made the change in conjunction with the arrival of Harris Lewin as the new vice chancellor for research, given his knowledge, skills and technical expertise in building long-term, multifaceted corporate partnerships in areas of research strength and growth for the campus. … The Emeriti Association is inviting emeritus faculty members to apply for the 2011-12 Edward A. Dickson Emeriti Professorship Award, with funding from a systemwide endowment for the support of emeriti in teaching, research and public service. [ More… ]

Rec Pool opens this weekend

Sunday, April 17, Rec Pool, corner of Hutchison Drive and La Rue Road

We're not sure about the sun, but the Rec Pool is ready for business — with opening day set for Sunday, April 17. Rec Pool admission is free for students and Activities and Recreation Center members, and $4.50 for the others (or $4 for ages 3 to 17). Hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Sunday. [ More… ]

The write stuff: Student authors take center stage

Thursday, April 21, 2-4 p.m. (Life Meds) and 4-6 p.m. (Prized Writing)

UC Davis students take center stage at two author events next week. The University Writing Program presents the newest edition of Prized Writing, showcasing the work of undergraduates from around the university. Over at the bookstore, undergraduate Sergio Sanders will sign copies of his newest book, Life Meds, Volume 2 — another collection of poems and words of wisdom.
