Associate professor 'infiltrates' Hollywood Photo: Man with 'censored' label across mouth

Christine Acham, an associate professor in the African American and African Studies program, presents her new documentary at the Sacramento International Film Festival next week — for Infiltrating Hollywood: The Rise and Fall of The Spook Who Sat By the Door, about a “controversial and repressed 1973 film.” Watch the trailer. Budget forum for staff and faculty, April 15

Last month, Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi sat down for a budget forum with undergraduates. Next Friday, April 15, the chancellor will do the same with staff, faculty and interested members of the public. The forum is scheduled from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the AGR Room at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. A live webcast is planned. Look for the link that morning on the UC Davis home page. [ More… ]

Shared service center: Decision day Sept. 8

At brown bag meetings and in e-mail updates, the Shared Services Implementation Team is providing answers as quickly as they become available about the shared service center that is now being developed. At a March 30 brown bag, the first in a monthly series, Associate Vice Chancellor Karen Hull gave an update on the project timeline, which she said now includes a Sept. 8 town hall meeting where Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and other campus leaders will announce decisions about the center's design — including the staffing model and the business processes that the center will handle. [ More… ]

Virginity scholar gets prestigious $60,000 fellowship

Margaret Ferguson, distinguished professor of English, has received a $60,000, yearlong fellowship to support the writing of her book, Missing the Maidenhead: Cultural Debates About the Hymen in the Early Modern Period. The award from the American Council of Learned Societies fellowship is one of the nation's most prestigious fellowships for the humanities. [ More… ]

Laurels: Charles Hess named distinguished professor emeritus

The Emeriti Association selected Charles E. Hess as the 2010-11 distinguished professor emeritus. He stepped down from regular teaching in 1994 — he is a professor in the Department of Environmental Horticulture — but has never stopped working for his profession, his college and the university community. … Plus other honors for faculty and staff. Campus bookstore branches into downtown

Our 103-year-old town and gown relationship is headed into a new phase. But, instead of town and gown, let’s call it town and T-shirt. And sweatshirt. And hat. And olive oil. These are among the university-branded products that the UC Davis Bookstore plans to sell in its new downtown shop, scheduled to open by mid-June at Second and F streets (near the Varsity Theatre). Testicular cancer patients cautioned about frequent CT scans

Older men with early testicular cancer who opt for surveillance with regular CT scans rather than surgery are at risk for secondary cancers, according to new research from UC Davis. The findings, published online in the journal Cancer, indicate that physicians should consider the risk of new cancers from CT scans when discussing treatment options with patients. [ More… ]
