Debate Central: Gubernatorial faceoff Sept. 28, attorney general program Oct. 5

UC Davis is Debate Central next week and the week after, when the leading candidates for governor and attorney general are due on campus for separate events. The gubernatorial debate between Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 28, and will be preceded that afternoon by a Debate Watch Forum with three UC Davis professors on the panel. Expect traffic delays, parking restrictions Sept. 28

The South Entry Parking Structure next to the Mondavi Center will be closed the morning and afternoon of Sept. 28, the day of the gubernatorial debate. In addition, Mrak Hall Drive and Alumni Lane will be closed to vehicle traffic from as early as 2 p.m. through midnight that day. The closures are necessary to accommodate the debate, which is expected to attract a crowd of more than 100 media representatives and more than a dozen TV satellite trucks. [ More… ]

NRC report on doctoral programs due out Sept. 28

The National Research Council on Sept. 28 is scheduled to release the results of a massive, comprehensive study of doctoral programs across the United States. UC Davis Graduate Studies Dean Jeffery Gibeling plans to give a briefing on the results at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the AGR Room at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. [ More… ]

Forums scheduled for provost candidates; no forum today for research VC candidate

The recruitment of a new provost and executive vice chancellor is advancing to the public forum stage. The forums — three are scheduled so far: Oct. 1, 4 and 6 — follow on the heels of two forums held in mid-September for the position of vice chancellor in charge of research. A forum for a third candidate for research vice chancellor had been tentatively scheduled for today (Sept. 24), but it has been called off. [ More… ]

Law school celebrates the First Amendment

The School of Law is taking the UC-wide Constitution Day a step further, by launching a new lecture series on the First Amendment. The inaugural talk, by Stanford Professor Pamela S. Karlan, is scheduled for Sept. 29. A leading constitutional law scholar, Karlan had been considered as a possible replacement for Associate Justice David Souter when he retired from the Supreme Court in 2009. [ More… ]

The entire university community is invited on Oct. 22 to celebrate the public launch of UC Davis' first-ever comprehensive fundraising campaign — The Campaign for UC Davis — and the important role of philanthropy in UC Davis' excellence. Best of times for wine consumers, UC Davis survey finds

California winemakers are once again bullish on the future of their industry, predicting that business will revive within three years from a slump that began in 2007, reports Robert Smiley, dean and professor emeritus at the Graduate School of Management. Smiley presented these and other findings from two recent surveys of wine industry professionals and executives earlier this week during the annual Wine Industry Financial Symposium in Napa. UC Davis researchers find that Salmonella creates environment in human intestines to foster its own growth

A study led by UC Davis researchers has found how the bacteria Salmonella enterica exploits immune response in the human gut to enhance its own reproductive and transmission success. The discovery, reported this week in the journal Nature, may help scientists develop ways to control this common cause of food poisoning. [ More… ]

Plant sale: Arboretum lines up the wagons!

The arboretum is lining up its little red wagons for the first plant sale of the year, focusing on California native plants. The first two hours are restricted to members of Friends of the UC Davis Arboretum. Not a member? Not to worry. You can join at the gate to get early admission as well as a free plant. Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as secretary of state, will discuss her time at the highest levels of the federal government in a conversation with political science professor Larry Berman.
