Campus community invited to Fall Convocation
The official kickoff of the academic year is set for 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22, in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The entire campus community is invited to the program and the reception afterward. The theme is "UC Davis: A Vision of Excellence," the same title that Chancellor Linda Katehi gave to the campus's new vision statement. [ More… ]

Laurels: Faculty, grad students are tops in agricultural economics
Two UC Davis professors and a Ph.D. alumnus are the recipients of this year's Quality of Research Discovery Award from the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association. Study finds low liver cancer survival rates among Laotian/Hmong-Americans
Among Asian-Americans living in California, Laotian/Hmong-Americans have the lowest survival rates — between one and two times lower than other Asian groups — for the most common type of liver cancer, a new study by researchers with the UC Davis School of Medicine has found. The study, the largest population-based examination of liver cancer rates among Asian-Americans, highlights a profound disparity that calls for targeted outreach to detect and treat the disease earlier among Laotian/Hmong-Americans. Theatre and dance: 'Bountiful, inventive' season
The Department of Theatre and Dance this week announced its "most bountiful and inventive season yet," including two hit Broadway musicals, a Sideshow Physical Theatre world premiere and visiting artists' original pieces. UC transitions: Merced chancellor to step down
UC Merced Chancellor Sung-Mo "Steve" Kang has announced his decision to step down as chancellor in June 2011 to return to teaching and research. And Lynne Withey, who has guided University of California Press through some of the most transformative years in its history, will retire from her position as director at the end of 2010. [ More… ]

'Chicano Movement Activists' public program today

UC Davis students are due to take part today in a free public program recognizing the struggles and accomplishments of Sacramento-area Chicano activists. The program includes video-oral histories, developed by the students in the course of their interviews with a number of activists, Rudy Cuellar Jr., Graciela B. The newly formed Davis Shakespeare Ensemble's debut production, Romeo and Juliet, is set to open next week, with eight shows planned.
