Katehi appointed to FBI advisory board

Chancellor Linda Katehi has been appointed to the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board, which promotes discussion and outreach between research universities and the FBI. The board, established in 2005 and comprising about 20 presidents and chancellors of major research universities, is part of an increasing engagement between the FBI and institutions of higher education. Passphrase deadline looms

IET's countdown clock for the switch to passphrases — required for all staff and faculty — is set to strike zero on Nov. 1. At that time, passwords will start expiring, not all of them at once, but in batches over about a three-month period ending in early February. The password-to-passphrase switch applies to the campus authentication service and any others that use Kerberos passwords. [ More… ]

Transitions: Undergraduate Studies, Education Abroad Center, Fire Department

Patricia A. Turner has been appointed director of The Reinvention Center at the University of Miami, and will continue in her role as vice provost for Undergraduate Studies at UC Davis at a 50-percent appointment. Professor Michelle Yeh has taken a leadership role at the Education Abroad Center. Patricia Johnson, a captain in the UC Davis Fire Department, has been named interim fire marshal for the Davis campus, while Assistant Fire Chief Wes Arvin takes on fire marshal duties full time on the Sacramento campus. Laurels: Carey, Wainwright become fellows of the California Academy of Sciences

Professor James Carey, entomology, and Peter Wainwright, evolution and ecology, are among 12 new fellows of the California Academy of Sciences, whose public face is the physical academy — an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and a four-story rainforest — in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Hate-Free Initiative: Laramie Project's Moises Kaufman to visit

Wednesday, Oct. 20, noon and 7 p.m., Jackson Hall, Mondavi Center

Just weeks after the nationwide premiere of The Laramie Project 10 Years Later, one of the authors of the original play is due at UC Davis to continue the discussion of the Matthew Shepard case and its impact, and the broader impact of hate crimes. Moises Kaufman is scheduled to participate in two free events on Oct. 20: "A Conversation with Moises Kaufman: The State of Hate Crimes and Identity," and "An Evening with Moises Kaufman: Theatre as Dialogue."
