Campus’s Smart Lighting saves energy, serves as model for Californians
UC Davis this week turned on a new Smart Lighting Initiative to slash the amount of electricity it uses to illuminate its buildings and grounds. UC Davis is the first large institution in California to act on a September state mandate to reduce lighting energy use by 60 percent or more by 2020. Building community: West Village student apartments slated to open next fall
West Village student apartments, college facilities and a village square are giving new shape to community life at UC Davis. Construction began this summer, and the first apartments and the square (with space available for shops and restaurants) are scheduled for occupancy next fall. The Los Rios Community College District plans to open the doors of its $12.4 million Davis Center to more than 2,000 students in January 2012. [ More… ]
Fleet Services launches follow-up survey on Davis-Berkeley shuttle schedule
A recent survey regarding the Davis-Berkeley shuttle’s afternoon schedule received almost 1,000 responses, the majority of which indicated that people favored a later departure time from Davis. As a result, a second survey is under way "to further identify the optimal" departure time. Under the existing schedule, the afternoon shuttle departs Davis at 2:15. The follow-up survey asks people to pick a new departure time from among the following: 3:30, 4, 4:30, 5 or 5:30 p.m. [ More… ]

British radio drama on stage — and on KDVS, too
Artist-in-Residence Lucy Gough is bringing British radio drama to the UC Davis stage, in her new work Hinterland, a two-part play about the search for the soul, premiering Dec. 1-4 in Main Theatre. Gough wrote Hinterland for stage and radio — and the campus’s KDVS 90.3 FM will take advantage of the latter format, by presenting a live audio cast of the play as it is performed the night of Dec. 2. The Department of Music fall concert calendar concludes next week with four programs, four days in a row, Nov. 30 to Dec. 3. The Mondavi Center celebrates the holidays with Handel’s Messiah, dating from 1741, and something new: the U.S. premiere of Natt I Betlehem, a collection of Christmas music originally recorded in the Nativity Church of Bethlehem.
