Gov. Schwarzenegger wasted little time this week in telling some 1,200 delegates to his global climate summit why he moved the third annual event from Los Angeles to UC Davis: “We decided to bring this conference to the environmental capital of the world.” Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and dozens of other professors and researchers backed up the governor’s claim, showcasing their expertise by way of presentations, posters and tours. [ More… ]

Regents approve fee increases, expanded financial aid

The Board of Regents, confronting a $1 billion budget gap, voted Thursday to boost fees for all students by 8 percent and professional school fees by up to 31 percent. With expanded financial aid, also approved by the regents, an estimated 55 percent of undergraduates will not pay the 8 percent fee increase ($822). Action leads to protest in Mrak Hall lobby. Nosek returns on interim assignment; search opens for bio sci dean

Retired UC Davis administrator Stan Nosek is stepping in as interim vice chancellor of the Office of Research. He will fill the role until the March 30 arrival of Harris Lewin, who was appointed to the position last month. Head-neck cancer patients fare better with radiation if they never smoked

Patients with head and neck cancer who have never smoked have much better survival rates after radiation therapy than patients with a history of smoking, new research from the UC Davis Cancer Center has found. [ More… ]

The Department of Music’s fall concerts continue with the Early Music Ensemble on Nov. 21, and, then, four concerts, four days in a row, Nov. 30 to Dec. 3. Artist-in-Residence Lucy Gough is bringing British radio drama to the UC Davis stage, in her new work Hinterland, a two-part play about the search for the soul. Gough wrote Hinterland for stage and radio — and KDVS 90.3 FM will take advantage of the latter format, by presenting a live audio cast of Hinterland as it is performed the night of Dec. 2.
