The Campus Community Book Project's schedule for next week includes Asian Voices, a collection of performance pieces in which students peel away at their upbringing to offer individual takes on the Asian American experience. President offers proposals to strengthen UC finances

UC President Mark G. Yudof announced Nov. 8 a series of proposed actions intended to shore up university finances, preserve the system's tradition of excellence in education and research and throw open its doors to an even broader range of deserving Californians. A chemical engineer and a plant scientist have been selected to receive the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Ilke Arslan, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, and Jeffrey Ross-Ibarra, an assistant professor in the Department of Plant Sciences, were among 85 researchers chosen by President Obama to receive the award, the nation's highest honor for professionals in the early stages of their scientific research careers. An award, and a farewell, for social services scholar Michael Lawler

Next week's Academic Federation dinner is, first and foremost, a celebration of Michael J. Lawler as the recipient of the 2010 James H. Meyer Distinguished Achievement Award, the federation's highest honor. But Lawler, director of UC Davis Extension's Center for Human Services, whose work has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in every one of California's 58 counties, will no doubt hear fond farewells, too. Governors' Global Climate Summit 3

Presummit activities: Sunday, Nov. 14

The giant tent you see at the south edge of campus is only part of the Governors' Global Climate Summit 3, taking place Monday and Tuesday. The main venue is the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, where leaders from around the United States and the world are coming together to address the topic, "Building a Green Economy." The tent is the venue for the Global Pavilion, described as a "Green Solutions Showcase." Presummit activities on Sunday include "Regional Solutions Research Appetizers," an afternoon event featuring UC Davis experts and a poster session. [ More… ]

Holiday food drives start next week

Campus Recreation: Nov. 15-Dec. 15

Two holiday food drives are scheduled to begin next Monday. The donation process for the Mail Services drive could not be easier: You simply leave canned food and dry goods with your outgoing mail — to be picked up by Mail Services personnel. Campus Recreation will be collecting donations at three locations: the Activities and Recreation Center, the Craft Center and Outdoor Adventures. [ More… ]
