Make way for the Amgen Tour of California

The Amgen Tour of California on May 17 will bring a temporary closure of Russell Boulevard at the north edge of campus, and also will affect Unitrans bus service. And, this being Davis, home of scientists and bicyclists alike, a cycling symposium is taking place on May 16. [ More… ]

Spring commencements: Law school graduates go first

Graduates and guests at UC Davis' spring commencements will hear from leaders and innovators in a variety of fields: cancer care, administrative law, higher education, science and technology, and brewing. The law school commencement, the first of the spring season, is set for 4 p.m. today in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. The university plans to carry live webcasts of every commencement and to maintain each recording in an on-demand archive. [ More… ]

Dispatches from the Gulf of Mexico

Michael Ziccardi, director of the UC Davis Oiled Wildlife Care Network, is featured in a story about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in today's San Francisco Chronicle. So far, rescuers have not encountered a significant number of affected animals. "This is the strangest spill I've ever worked on," Ziccardi says. Open forums scheduled for two candidates for university librarian

The search for a new university librarian is proceeding to campus forums and formal interviews. The first candidates coming to campus are Denise Stephens of the University of Kansas (May 26) and Steven Gass of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (June 1). [ More… ]

Writers in the classroom, in the bookstore, in the arboretum

An ink-stained wretch, The Simpsons, and Friends and Strangers in colonial Pennsylvania all play a role in author events this month. And those are only the indoor events. Outdoors, the arboretum is presenting a pair of Writers in the Garden programs, with guests who are due to read from their works and talk about the importance of the natural world in their writing. Famed British director and student cast cook up an acting feast

M.F.A. acting candidate Avila Reese relates her acting experiences under British director Anna Fenemore, spring quarter Granada artist in residence in the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance. Fenemore is directing Reese and others in the play The Matter of Taste, which explores parallels between food and theatre. [ More… ]

UC Walks: A systemwide health-and-wellness day

Wednesday, May 19, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., East Quad Farmers Market and Activities and Recreation Center

Everyone in the UC system is being encouraged to take a walk — for health and fitness — as often as possible, and especially on May 19 — designated UC Walks day, the first systemwide health-and-wellness event targeted specifically at faculty and staff. You can walk whenever you want, with whomever you want, or, at UC Davis, you can meet up at two gathering spots, where free T-shirts will be available while supplies last. [ More… ]
