Shared services open forum

As part of the Chancellor's Organizational Excellence Initiative, an open forum will be held June 29 to discuss recent findings on administration streamlining. The areas of focus are finance, human resources, IET, research administration, gift processing, development, communications, and the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost. Nominations sought for 2011-12 Campus Community Book Project

Even as planning continues for the 2010-11 Campus Community Book Project, the organizers are already looking ahead to 2011-12. The topic is confirmed — Native American-American Indian culture — and now the Campus Council on Community and Diversity is asking for book nominations. [ More… ]

SummerMusic: Two free concerts on the Quad

The Mondavi Center grows quiet in the summertime, but the programming staff has still lined up a couple of concerts for us — to be presented on the Quad, with admission free and open to the public. The bluegrass band Infamous Stringdusters is scheduled for July 10; the Nortec Collective, which "fuses electronica and techno with the norteño and tambora music of northern Mexico," is set for Aug. 27. Chancellor launches blog on Huffington Post

Chancellor Linda Katehi's blog on Huffington Post went live on June 22. In her first entry, she discusses the "crippling" effects of the state's fiscal crisis on the UC system, and suggests that the federal government could protect and nurture higher education nationwide by making strategic investments in it. Update on university librarian recruitment

Dog-fighting DNA database established to help crack down on animal cruelty

The nation's first criminal dog-fighting DNA database has been established by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the Humane Society of Missouri and the Louisiana SPCA, and will be maintained at the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. Known as the Canine CODIS (Combined DNA Index System), the database is designed to help the criminal justice system investigate and prosecute dog-fighting cases. [ More… ]

Native American studies professor wins Guggenheim

Zoila Mendoza, a UC Davis professor of Native American studies, has been awarded a prestigious Guggenheim fellowship to continue her research on a recurring pilgrimage that Peruvian highlanders take through the Andes. [ More… ]

Researchers in the Department of Plant Sciences are addressing some of those issues by improving many of our favorite vegetables and salad ingredients — taking them from field to the lab and the market, right into your salad bowl. In memoriam: Librarian John Ward dies

Librarian John Ward died at his home of a heart attack on June 22. He was 57 years old. "John was a librarian extraordinaire, linguist, biologist, historian, computer expert and a true Renaissance man," said colleague Rebecca Davis. A memorial service for Ward will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow (June 26) at the First Baptist Church, 10720 Coloma Road, Rancho Cordova. [ More… ]

Summer Jam-uh! by the Band-uh!

Monday, June 28, July 12 and 26, and Aug. 9 and 23, 7-9 p.m., Rec Pool

The Band-uh! is ready to Jam-uh! Head on over to the Rec Pool, where the Cal Aggie Marching Band-uh! will be performing every other Monday night, starting June 28. The free performances on the lawn just north of the pool are scheduled to begin right after the pool closes. [ More… ]

Former ambassador to speak on the Middle East and the global economy

Former U.S. Ambassador Edward P. Djerejian is scheduled to deliver an address on "The Broader Middle East and the Global Economy." The talk is part of the Dean's Distinguished Speakers Series at the Graduate School of Management. The GSM and the Institute of Governmental Affairs are co-sponsoring the talk.
