Governors' Global Climate Summit 3 to be held at UC Davis

Gov. Schwarzenegger announced today that the Governors' Global Climate Summit will relocate from Los Angeles to UC Davis, where, according to the governor's news release, the summit can take advantage of the university's long history of world-class research and development in environmental sustainability and green jobs. Global Climate Summit 3 is scheduled for Nov. 15-16 at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts. [ More… ]

Scientists roll out 'not-welcome' mats to kill Tahoe clams

UC Davis scientists this week began a novel attempt to control a dime-sized clam that threatens Lake Tahoe's ecological balance — including its trademark clarity. The experiment involves installing an acre of rubber sheeting on the lake bottom to kill the clams by depriving them of oxygen. [ More… ]

Infamous Stringdusters open SummerMusic series

The first of two summer concerts on the Quad is set for tomorrow night (July 10), featuring the Infamous Stringdusters, a bluegrass band from Nashville, Tenn. The concert is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., with the Quad opening at 6 p.m. for picnicking. Admission is free and open to the public. [ More… ]

Thiebaud selected for California Hall of Fame

Art professor emeritus Wayne Thiebaud is among 14 people chosen for induction this year into the California Museum's California Hall of Fame. Thiebaud, who joined the art department faculty in 1960 and continues to teach occasional classes, has established himself as one of the most important contemporary American artists — although he prefers to be called a "painter." Economist Catherine Morrison Paul was at the top of her field

Although she was ranked among the nation's premier economists, Professor Catherine Morrison Paul was personable, unassuming and just plain fun, according to colleagues who worked closely with the expert on economic productivity. A resident of Woodland, she died June 30 in a Sacramento hospital from complications of leukemia. She was 57. A celebration of her life is planned on campus July 17. [ More… ]

Laurels: Mathematician Romik receives early-career grant

Dan Romik, assistant professor of mathematics, has received a $400,000 early-career grant from the National Science Foundation. Other noteworthy honors and awards include the appointment of Lars Berglund as chair of a federal panel that reviews National Institutes of Health grant applications for research dealing with AIDS and HIV. Campus Rec's Business Center to add passport services

A passport application office is due to open at UC Davis by the end of the month. Campus Recreation announced that its Business Center, inside the Activities and Recreation Center, will accept passport applications and fees — and even take photos of applicants, if they need them for their passports. UC Davis wows AAAS meeting with show-and-tell on art-science connectivity

UC Davis' pioneering work in art-science connectivity took center stage at the annual meeting of the Pacific Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The UC Davis participants included atmospheric science professor Terry Nathan, who uses photography as a link between art and science. [ More… ]

Team Challenge: Tres Amigas capture walking competition title

Each of the members of Team Tres Amigas walked, on average, 21,773 steps a day over eight weeks, to win the Aggies on the Move Team Challenge this spring. While Tres Amigas did their walking on the Davis campus, another team was walking far, far away — at the Bodega Marine Laboratory. [ More… ]
