$371 million extra for UC?
After two years of severe budget cuts for UC, Gov. Schwarzenegger last week unveiled a 2010-11 spending plan that includes $371 million in additional money for UC plus funding for Cal Grants. This good news comes on top of the governor's Jan. 6 proposal for a constitutional amendment to guarantee that UC and the California State University system would receive a set percentage of the state general fund, by shifting money from prisons. Record number of transfer students seek admission
A 25 percent increase in the number of students seeking to transfer to UC Davis for fall 2010 has contributed to a record high of more than 54,500 applications. [ More… ]
Davis team's film to be screened at Sundance festival
A 4-year-old boy's hunt for a rabbit — filmed around small-town Davis and edited in a campus studio — has put a UC Davis graduate student and his co-director on the stage of perhaps the most prestigious film festival in the United States. Robert Machoian, a second-year master's student, and Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck, both of Davis, will have their 10-minute film screened as an official selection of the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, Jan. 21 to 31. Fired up: UC Davis student firefighters forge hot careers
UC Davis' student firefighting program is one of just three in the nation. Historically, more than 50 percent of the program's students go on to firefighting careers, which include paramedics, hazardous materials specialists and other fields. Members, who work alongside career firefighters, are selected through a competitive academy offered every other year. This is one of those years; applications are being accepted through Feb. 5. Climate change, development hit butterflies hard
California butterflies are reeling from a one-two punch of climate change and land development, says an unprecedented analysis led by UC Davis butterfly expert Arthur Shapiro. The new analysis, due for online publication this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, gives insights on how a major and much-studied group of organisms is reacting to the Earth's warming climate. Standard mileage rate decreases for 2010
The university's reimbursement rate for the business use of a private automobile is decreasing from 55 cents to 50 cents a mile. The reimbursement for moving a car during a relocation is also decreasing. The new rates are effective for expenses incurred on or after Jan. 1. [ More… ]
