Staff Assembly opens scholarship application period
Staff Assembly is now accepting applications for staff scholarships, including the new Larry N. Vanderhoef award, and staff dependent scholarships. The application deadline is March 31. Also, the Coalition of UC Staff Assemblies is conducting a systemwide survey on staff morale. [ More… ]
National Science Foundation director to visit UC Davis
The new Chancellor's Colloquia series is set to begin March 5 with a talk by Arden L. Bement, director of the National Science Foundation. Bement will speak on "Innovation: An Old American Virtue, a New American Imperative" beginning at 11 a.m. in the UC Davis Conference Center Ballroom. People planning to attend are asked to RSVP. UC Davis surgical team performs state's first robotic-assisted heart bypass
Two cardiothoracic surgeons at UC Davis Medical Center have performed the first robotic-assisted, multiarterial, cardiac bypass in California. The surgery is a highly complex but minimally invasive operation that offers patients quicker recovery and less blood loss than with conventional open-heart bypass procedures. [ More… ]

Chancellor Katehi has appointed four recruitment advisory committees for provost-executive vice chancellor, university librarian, vice chancellor of the Office of Research and executive director of the comprehensive campaign. Words (and pictures) take wing with Belle Yang
The School of Education's sixth annual Words Take Wing celebration, honoring diversity in children's literature, is set for March 5 — with author-artist Belle Yang as the speaker. Yang's picture books include Chili-Chili-Chin-Chin, Always Come Home to Me and Foo the Flying Frog of Washtub Pond. She also wrote and illustrated the adult nonfiction works Baba: A Return to China Upon My Father's Shoulders and The Odyssey of a Manchurian. [ More… ]
