Professor Emeritus Wayne Thiebaud last taught his popular "Art Theory and Criticism" class in the fall of 2008. So, to no one's surprise, nearly 300 people lined up Nov. 18 for his return, not to the classroom, but for an on-stage conversation with an art critic. Data Center shutdown: SmartSite on the list of affected services

Add SmartSite to the list of significant computer services — including all campus e-mail — that will go down the day after Christmas as the result of a planned service interruption at the Davis Campus Data Center. The interruption will affect most of the services that are hosted by the data center, including those like the SmartSite course management tool that are used for grades. [ More… ]

Former employee arrested on embezzlement charges

Former UC Davis employee Jennifer Beeman was arrested Dec. 9 on a charge of embezzlement of public funds and eight other felonies in connection with her alleged misuse of public funds as director of the Campus Violence Prevention Program. [ More… ]

Student speaker perseveres, inspires

Kirstie Kampen is more than ready — even against long odds — to step to the microphone before thousands of graduating students and their guests at Saturday's fall commencement. The student speaker — selected through a competition — has spent a lifetime learning how to speak after the early loss of her hearing. A live webcast of the ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m. in the ARC Pavilion, will be available. [ More… ]

UC Commission on the Future final report released

The final report of the UC Commission on the Future, convened last year to map out strategies to preserve excellence and access in higher education through the state fiscal crisis and beyond, was unveiled Dec. 6. The 20 recommendations endorsed by the commission address five broad categories: teaching and curriculum, undergraduate enrollment and access, research and graduate education, fiscal discipline and administrative reform, and public education and advocacy. Proposed food pantry to serve UC Davis students

Two UC Davis students are leading an effort to establish a food pantry to serve fellow students who are struggling to make ends meet. Senior Justin Gold and junior Hannah Kirshner are working through logistics — including health and safety inspections — and trying to raise funds to open The Pantry by Jan. 4. In a recent student survey, almost 25 percent of UC Davis respondents reported that they "somewhat" to "very often" skipped meals to save money. [ More… ]

UC Davis alumna sworn in as chief justice

In this video clip from Sacramento television station CBS-13, UC Davis alumna Tani Cantil-Sakauye is sworn in as the second woman to serve as chief justice of California's Supreme Court. Gov. Schwarzenegger administered the oath of office to her at the state Capitol. Cantil-Sakauye received her undergraduate and law degrees at UC Davis. [ More… ]

Laurels: D. Kern Holoman receives American Musicology Society's highest honor

The American Musicology Society recently bestowed its highest honor on D. Kern Holoman, music professor and conductor emeritus of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra. Of the society's 3,600 members, only 37 have been dubbed "honorary" — and Holoman is now one of them. This compilation of recent honors also notes a "partnership award" given by the federal government to Professor Richard Bostock and others from the Department of Plant Pathology for their work in developing the National Plant Diagnostic Network. Happy holidays for kids, families and pets

For the kids, we have toy drives on the Davis and Sacramento campuses. For families, we have a holiday food drive. For dogs and cats, we have pictures with Santa Paws! Toys and food are being collected through Wednesday, Dec. 15. The Santa Paws event, a benefit for a student-run clinic that provides care for the pets of homeless people, is set for Sunday, Dec. 12. Annual asbestos notification

California Health and Safety Code Section 25915 requires that all UC Davis employees be notified annually of the presence of asbestos in campus buildings constructed prior to 1979. [ More… ]

Campus assistance for FY 2011 F&A rate proposal

This directive addresses the campus's requirement to submit a Facilities and Administrative rate proposal to the Department of Health and Human Services Division of Cost Allocation by March 31, 2012. The preparation and subsequent negotiation of the proposal will require the collection of data from many campus units. Coordination of the proposal is assigned to the F&A Rate Development Team under Accounting and Financial Services. [ More… ]

11th annual Serenata Colombiana

Davis' Colombian community, including many people affiliated with UC Davis, presents the 11th annual Serenata Colombiana cultural showcase. Proceeds benefit a Colombian organization that assists female heads of household who have been forcibly displaced. [ More… ]

Lara Downes Family Concert: Neverland to Wonderland

Sunday, Dec. 12, 1 and 3 p.m., Vanderhoef Studio Theatre, Mondavi Center

Drawing on the classic tales Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, UC Davis Artist-in-Residence Downes, a pianist, celebrates childhood mystery and enchantment, including music by Leonard Bernstein, Erich Korngold, Benny Golson and David Del Tredici. The program includes a multimedia element created and directed by Mindy Cooper, with performers from the Mondavi Center's new Young Artists Theatre Workshop. [ More… ]
