AggieCards make their debut, along with bank branch
The campus is in the process of distributing new student IDs, called AggieCards. Faculty and staff can get them, too — but not just yet. Employee cards are still being produced. Anyone with a card is welcome to link it to U.S. Bank — for use as an ATM and-or debit card. You can open a U.S. Bank account without leaving campus starting Aug. 9, when the bank opens a branch in the east wing of the Memorial Union. [ More… ]
Aggienaut makes history: Two spacewalks and a sign language video
Tracy Caldwell Dyson, who received her doctorate at UC Davis in 1997, is scheduled to make her first spacewalks Aug. 7 and 11, as part of a team that has been assigned to replace a broken pump on the International Space Station. She is already the first person to use American Sign Language aboard the space station — a language that she studied at UC Davis. [ More… ]
UC addresses state budget proposal
In a statement about the latest budget plan from Democrats in the state Legislature, Patrick Lenz, UC vice president for budget, says, "We're grateful that the latest budget proposal offered by the Democratic leadership of the Assembly and Senate keeps funding of higher education exactly the same as what Gov. Evidence from ATM fire going to federal lab today
Evidence from this week's suspected arson attack on the Memorial Union's wall of ATMs will be turned over to a federal agency today, Detective Sgt. Paul Henoch said. He added that he had reviewed surveillance video but is not yet releasing any information about what he saw. [ More… ]
Laurels: Lifetime achievement awards, hall of fame recognition
The School of Law announced a trio of top awards for three emeriti: Richard Wydick, Cruz Reynoso and Mortimer Schwartz. Other UC Davis faculty honored recently include five professors who were named fellows by the American Chemical Society. [ More… ]
Two free outdoor concerts in August
Outdoor concerts are a UC Davis staple every summer. The next SummerMusic on the Quad, sponsored by the Mondavi Center, is set for Aug. 27. But first, the UC Davis Health System and its Community Advisory Board are presenting the party band Pop Fiction in the fourth annual summer concert on the Sacramento campus, from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 11. Recreation: Football tickets aid COPS charity; deadline near for River Cats game
The campus Police Department is selling discount tickets for the Aggies' home opening football game, Sept. 11, as a fundraiser for Concerns of Police Survivors. Staff Assembly has organized a UC Davis Picnic at a River Cats baseball game, and you have only until 5 p.m. Aug. 11 to buy tickets for the Aug. 29 event. [ More… ]
Wall calendars due in bookstores Aug. 23
If you have a 2009-10 UC Davis wall calendar, make a notation for Aug. 23: That is the day when the 2010-11 calendars are due to be available through the campus bookstore. You will be able to buy them at any bookstore, first come, first served, while supplies last. Or, preorders are being taken now for free delivery. [ More… ]
At the Mondavi: 2010-11 Distinguished Speakers Series
The Mondavi Center's 2010-11 distinguished speakers boast a range of expertise from politics to puns: former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, science prodigy Jonah Lehrer, novelist Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket), Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and humorist David Sedaris. The last speaker of the 2009-10 series was Ira Glass, producer and host of National Public Radio's This American Life. [ More… ]
