Educator: Nation needs the humanities
Don Randel, president of one of the nation's leading philanthropic organizations, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will meet with UC Davis leaders and faculty and deliver a public address next week during a three-day visit to campus. His talk on "The Values of the University," free and open to the public, is set for 5:30 p.m. April 27 in the Vanderhoef Studio Theatre at the Mondavi Center. [ More… ]
Top senate award to political scientist
Political science professor Larry Berman, an internationally acclaimed scholar of the Vietnam War and American presidency, has been named the 2010 Faculty Research Lecturer by his peers. Long one of the campus's most visible political scientists, Berman was nominated and selected for the award by faculty colleagues who cited the volume and quality of his groundbreaking research and the 12 books he has written or co-authored. Our values soar: Campus reaffirms Principles of Community, hands out awards
UC Davis' celebration of diversity soared even higher this year when Chancellor Linda Katehi joined faculty, staff and student leaders in reaffirming the 20-year-old Principles of Community. Chancellor: Athletics cuts painful but necessary
In a letter accepting the recommendation by Intercollegiate Athletics leaders to cut four sports, Chancellor Katehi writes: "During my brief tenure as chancellor, I have come to appreciate the rich and unique athletic traditions at UC Davis. Given the difficult budgetary situation that the university is facing, I believe this budget model provides a prudent means of preserving and enhancing these athletic traditions for the future." Undergraduate conference expands to two days
More than half of UC Davis undergraduates conduct research before they graduate, and next weekend more than 300 of them are expected to participate in the 21st annual Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Conference. The conference, which is free and open to the public, is designed to familiarize the participants with the rigors of presenting research in a scholarly manner. [ More… ]
Everything's coming up roses in new UC Davis test garden
UC Davis has been selected to be a garden testing site for the All-America Rose Selections, a nonprofit association dedicated to introducing and promoting exceptional roses. The campus's third annual Rose Day seminar and sale is set for April 30 at Foundation Plant Services, with a public rose sale the next day, May 1. [ More… ]

UC Davis researchers are leading a two-week expedition to Guatemala's Lago de Atitlan, a large, beautiful lake that is turning green. Studio 301 Productions, the only student-run theater group on campus, is flashing back to the '60s, a time of flower children, free love and long hair — lots of hair, as in Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical. World Bank economist to speak
