Union staff notified of furlough alternatives

UC Davis managers and supervisors today are informing represented employees that they face, at a minimum, temporary layoffs or reductions in time — as alternatives to participating in the systemwide furlough plan. UC Davis also faces another thorny labor issue as the new academic year begins: a threatened faculty walkout on Sept. 24, the fall quarter's first day of instruction. [ More… ]

Convocation looks to next 100 years

All members of the campus community are invited to attend the annual Fall Convocation. This year's event will be held next Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Mondavi Center. This year's theme is "UC Davis' Sustainable and Transformative Second Century," and new Chancellor Linda Katehi will be the featured speaker. Staff release time for this annual campuswide gathering is appropriate with supervisory approval. [ More… ]

New directions: UC Commission on the Future seeks new vision based on today's reality

Regents Chairman Russell Gould, at the first meeting of the UC Commission on the Future, called on members to do "nothing short of reimagining" the University of California. The commission's goal is to develop a new vision for the university that affirms its core values of excellence and access while addressing financial challenges from declining state funding, currently a two-year, $813 million budget cut. Fall into art: New exhibitions in the new quarter

The start of the fall quarter means a new crop of exhibitions at the campus's art museums. And opening today at the Education Abroad Center is Paintings from Abroad, a collection of works by UC Davis students who took a Summer Abroad class called "Painting in Rome and Umbria," led by art professor Gina Werfel. Food, Etc.: East Quad Farmers Market and Good Life harvest

The East Quad Farmers Market opens for the fall quarter in a new location, still on the East Quad but on the north side. Opening day is set for Sept. 23, and the market will continue every Wednesday through Nov. 18 (except Veterans Day, Nov. 11). Hours are 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. And if you are interested in fresh lavender, sage, thyme or chive, free of charge, bring your scissors to the Good Life Garden on Sept. 24. [ More… ]

Get fit this fall: 'Try Before You Buy' at the ARC, Aggies on the Move and more

If you're looking for low-cost ways to stay in shape, the campus has some programs to help. The Activities and Recreation Center is holding its quarterly "Try Before You Buy" offer Sept. 21 through Oct. 3; the Aggies on the Move walking group is sponsoring a team challenge and a "Couch to 5K Run or Walk" training program; and you can also sign up for the Putah Creek Reserve Cross Country Footrace or the Retiree Center's Harley English Tennis Festival. Commemorating California's role in the AIDS fight

More than 300 scientists, health care professionals and students are expected to gather at UC Davis on Sept. 25 to commemorate the significant role that California played in the early years of research on AIDS and human immunodeficiency virus. The daylong event, including a series of nontechnical presentations, is free and open to the public. [ More… ]

Book deal: What Google access to UC library could mean for academic authors

On its face, the proposed settlement of a lawsuit over Google Book Search — the Internet titan's effort to digitize vast numbers of books, academic and otherwise, for all the world to consult online — is about resolving copyright and fair-use issues. But the settlement, which goes before a federal judge in New York for approval next month, is about much more than that, according to experts at a recent UC Berkeley School of Information conference on the topic. Poetry in the Garden

The arboretum presents poet Thomas Centolella, reading some of his work. The event is free and open to the public. The Commonwealth Club of California awarded him a silver medal for poetry in 1995, for his book "Lights & Mysteries." He received a Lannan Literary Award for Poetry in 1992. [ More… ]
