Lavernia, Pitts address faculty walkout and furlough plan
In a letter to deans and department chairs, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Enrique Lavernia offers departments temporary support funds to ensure that students have substitute instructors — if needed — on Sept. 24, the first day of classes. Some faculty have said they will stage a walkout that day to protest UC's systemwide furlough plan. In a separate letter, Lawrence H. Pitts, interim provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs at the Office of the President, lays out the rationale for confining furloughs to nonteaching days. [ More… ]

Exercise will test police, fire response
The UC Davis Police and Fire departments and up to 200 volunteers and other staff will take part in a major emergency exercise next Wednesday, Sept. 16. The exercise, named "Gallant Eagle," is designed to test the campus's ability to respond to a major violent incident. [ More… ]

Fume hood message: A bright, simple idea
If you work in a lab, one of the best habits is closing unattended chemical fume hoods — contraptions that consume a great deal of energy while protecting researchers from hazardous gases. To spread the message, UC Davis has launched a campaign to remind lab workers that "a closed hood is the safest hood." [ More… ]
Team fuses nanocircuits, biomembranes
UC Davis scientists contributed to the creation of a hybrid of silicon nanocircuits and biological components that mimics some of the processes that control the passage of molecules into and out of cells. The lipid-coated nanocircuits could lead to the development of new classes of biosensing tools, such as comprehensive blood-chemistry tests that fit on the point of a needle. [ More… ]
