In a letter to the campus community, Chancellor Linda Katehi expresses confidence that UC Davis can "turn challenge into opportunity through re-examination and creative re-invention, and through aggressively pursuing new sources of revenue." [ More… ]

Furlough plan takes effect systemwide

The systemwide furlough plan took effect this week, with most UC employees sharing the pain of pay cuts to help offset the loss of more than a billion dollars in state support. From Sept. 1 through Aug. 31, 2010, participating faculty and staff are required to take 11 to 26 furlough days. [ More… ]

UC Davis research exposes loopholes in gun-control laws

A new report from the UC Davis Violence Prevention Research Program reveals how gun shows and inconsistent laws put guns in criminals' hands. "Inside Gun Shows: What Goes on When Everybody Thinks Nobody's Watching," includes photos and videos that show illegal "straw" purchases, undocumented private-party gun sales and widespread availability of assault weapons. New conductor set for Oct. 4 performance

Christian Baldini will lead the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra next month in the first event of the Department of Music's 2009-10 season. The new season, announced Sept. 1, features the orchestra and other department mainstays as well as several special events. The music department also plans to continue its free noon-hour concerts. UC campuses sweep top spots in college rankings

UC Davis is among four University of California campuses ranked among the top 10 colleges in the nation in Washington Monthly's annual college rankings. UC President Mark G. Yudof announced the results in an open letter. [ More… ]

Blue Devils to play in Aggie Stadium

If there is a crowd at Aggie Stadium, and the lights are on, it must be an Aggie football game on Saturday, right? Not necessarily. UC Davis is allowing Davis High School the use of Aggie Stadium for football games while the Davis High stadium is being renovated — Thursday, Sept. 10; Friday, Sept. 18; and Thursday, Sept. 24. Mondavi additions: An Acoustic Evening, comedian Cleese and the Vienna Boys Choir

Musicians Lyle Lovett and John Hiatt; comedian John Cleese, best known for his starring role in Monty Python's Flying Circus; and the Vienna Boys Choir are new additions to the 2009-10 season at the Mondavi Center. Tickets for these "just added" programs became available in late August when the center began selling single tickets for its entire season. Staff and faculty receive a 10-percent discount on single-event tickets. [ More… ]

Unplug electronic devices during three-day weekend

Campus officials are asking staff and faculty to unplug their electronics during the three-day weekend (Sept. 5-6 and Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7), as an energy-saving measure. The campus will save more energy and money by adjusting thermostats higher, thereby lowering air conditioning use. [ More… ]

Rental of academic hoods, fall commencement 2009

All faculty and administrators who hold a degree from another university (or a UC degree other than a Ph.D.) and are planning to take part in the fall commencement ceremony must make reservations for an academic hood rental through their department office by Oct. 30. [ More… ]

First meeting of UC Commission on the Future

Tuesday, Sept. 8, 1:30-5 p.m., UCSF, with live audio broadcast

The University of California Commission on the Future will meet for the first time next Tuesday. Board of Regents Chairman Russell S. Gould created the commission to help ensure excellence, innovation and access to opportunity across the UC system amid acute financial challenges. Public forum on stem cell treatment opportunities

Thursday, Sept. 10, 6 p.m., UC Davis Education Building, 4610 X St., Sacramento

Four UC Davis stem cell experts will give brief presentations on stem cell research followed by question-and-answer sessions. The event, free and open to the public, is the second in a series of discussions entitled "Stem Cell Dialogues," created to inform the public about stem cell therapies UC Davis is developing to treat and cure a wide array of disease and injury.
