KVIE Channel 6 and Olive Center keep Centennial celebration going

KVIE public television Channel 6 is ready to add a final touch to the recently concluded UC Davis Centennial year: a half-hour program titled UC Davis at 100. The documentary, being presented as part of KVIE's ViewFinder series, is scheduled to premiere at 7 p.m. Oct. 14. That same day, the newest batch of UC Davis' Centennial Blend olive oil goes on sale at the campus bookstore, and a free tasting is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. [ More… ]

$2 million in grants for bullet, duct tape forensic science

Putting forensic science on a sound statistical footing is the aim behind three grants totaling more than $2.2 million awarded to the UC Davis program in forensic science by the U.S. Department of Justice. The grants: $1.4 million to develop a bullet-matching database, $700,000 for studying the impressions left on cartridge cases by firearms, and $150,000 to establish whether torn pieces of duct tape can be reliably matched. 3-D biotech game teaches students

Dozens of people across the United States have fallen ill, and public health officials suspect the mystery ailment may be a food-borne disease. Sounds like a line from a news story in recent years? Actually it's the story line for a new three-dimensional virtual reality educational game being developed by UC Davis for high school students and their teachers, aimed at introducing students to the many facets of biotechnology. The outdoors: Stebbins reserve enacts optional fees

UC Davis' Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve is asking for a little financial help this year, by establishing optional fees for guided nature outings and children's programs: $5 for person or $10 per family. Other visitors will be asked to pay a $2 day-use fee to enter the reserve, which is at the southeastern tip of Lake Berryessa on Highway 128. The reserve's new schedule includes a number of hikes with special emphases: plant identification, star gazing, photography, drawing and animal tracking. [ More… ]

Coming in 2010: Online directory with departmental listings

To save money and paper, UC Davis no longer prints a phone book. Individual listings have been available online for some time, and departmental listings are coming in early 2010. People will be able to go to the campus directory search site, enter the name of a department and see a listing of department information. [ More… ]

Police ramp up alcohol enforcement

Local police departments have increased enforcement efforts for alcohol-related offenses as part of a continuing effort to help UC Davis students make better choices and reduce alcohol-related problems on and off campus. The UC Davis and city of Davis police departments stepped up enforcement beginning on the first day of classes and will continue those efforts through Halloween, with an emphasis on Thursday and Saturday nights. UC Davis Health System adopts stringent flu-prevention policy

UC Davis Health System faculty, staff, students, and vendors and contractors are required to get vaccinated against the seasonal flu by Dec. 1 or wear masks covering their mouths and noses while at work or school to prevent the spread of infection. The new policy affects all health system clinics and facilities. [ More… ]

New ASAP programs: Stress resilience during tough times

The Academic and Staff Assistance Program announced two new programs on stress resilience. One program is for general staff: "Stress Resilience During Tough Economic Times." The other is for managers, supervisors and faculty: "Stress Resilience and Effective Leadership in Times of Change." Each program is scheduled for presentation five times, starting next week, with preregistration required. [ More… ]

Need a bike? Try the campus bike auction

Saturday, Oct. 10, 8 a.m., west entry garage, Hutchison Drive

This weekend brings the first of the campus's biannual bicycle auctions, run by Transportation and Parking Services. More than 400 abandoned and unclaimed bikes will be up for sale, with prices averaging from $30 to $40. Viewing opens at 8 a.m., and the auction starts at 9 a.m. [ More… ]

More than 130 events to bring neighbors together

Sunday, Oct. 11, noon-9 p.m.

Block parties will be held all over Davis from noon to 9 p.m. during the annual Davis Neighbors' Night Out. This informal event, organized by the city of Davis, UC Davis and the Associated Students of UC Davis, encourages neighbors to gather and get to know each other through activities like potluck dinners, barbecues, cookie exchanges and ice cream socials. Staff Open Forum: Reserve a seat or watch webcast

The chancellor and provost and others will present a budget update — including initiatives to help address the financial crisis, and information on furloughs and campus closures — plus a report on the vision for the campus.
