Late-night protest ends peacefully
A Tuesday night protest in Mrak Hall ended without arrests, as demonstrators reached an accord with the administration. Chancellor Linda Katehi, in an e-mail to students, acknowledges they "have every right to be upset and angry" over fee increases. Come Monday (Nov. 30), she will engage students in a dialogue from 5 to 7 p.m. at the ARC. [ More… ]
Head librarian's legacy in expansion, collections
Overseeing the remodeling and expansion of the Peter J. Shields Library is one of the reasons Marilyn Sharrow came to work as the university librarian in 1985. She completed that project and many more in the ensuing 24 years, and now she is announcing her retirement effective March 1. [ More… ]
Eric Weiner brings his bliss to UC Davis
This year's Campus Community Book Project closes with a visit by Eric Weiner on Dec. 1. Weiner is the author of The Geography of Bliss: One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World and will speak at two events at the Mondavi Center — a free afternoon panel discussion and a ticketed evening lecture and book signing. Vet students seek support to help pets of homeless people
UC Davis' Mercer Veterinary Clinic is asking for the public's help in providing holiday treats for the pets of homeless people in Sacramento. And, if you have a pet, the clinic has a treat for you, too: a picture of your pet with Santa Paws! [ More… ]
At the Mondavi: Danú and beer lead off holidays
Irish pub band Danú comes back to the Mondavi Center Dec. 2, leading off a string of holiday programs. And with Danú’s return, the center is trying again with Concerning Beer, a free Forum@MC that was canceled earlier this year. Band member Benny McCarthy is expected to join in the forum discussion with campus beer and brewing expert Charlie Bamforth, who will also lead the audience through a tasting of four beers. [ More… ]
Ceremony set for interned Japanese American students
UC Davis will hold a special ceremony Dec. 12 to recognize Japanese American students who had their educations derailed by World War II internments. Meanwhile, UC continues its search for students interned during World War II; the campuses want to honor as many people as possible and are still seeking potential recipients. [ More… ]
Law graduates excel in bar exam
Graduates of UC Davis School of Law who took the California State Bar Exam in July 2009 posted an outstanding 89 percent pass rate among first-time test takers — 10 percentage points above the average among the 20 California law schools approved by the American Bar Association, according to statistics released this week by State Bar officials.
