Budget update: Message from the provost
In a letter to the campus community, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Enrique Lavernia sets out what we know about the current budget situation, and how the campus might address the financial challenges. Outgoing Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef and his wife, Rosalie, are inviting faculty, staff and students to an open house June 5, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Chancellor's Residence. As much as the open house provides people with an opportunity to give their regards to the Vanderhoefs, the event also gives the chancellor and his wife the opportunity to say thank you to the campus community. UCOP: 'Putting UC under Legislature's control is a non-starter'
The UC Office of the President issued a response to legislation sponsored by state Sen. Leland Yee and several of his colleagues that would repeal the university's autonomy. The statement begins, "It is absurd that Senator Yee and his co-sponsors want to rewrite the California Constitution to strip the university of its historic autonomy and place it under direct control of the state Legislature." Parking fees on the rise: TAPS issues fewer tickets and more courtesy notices
Transportation and Parking Services announced a $1-a-month increase for most parking permit fees in 2009-10, the first increase in four years. The good news is that TAPS is writing fewer tickets and issuing more courtesy notices as part of a strategy to inform first-time visitors of campus parking rules. [ More… ]
Biz plan winner lights the way for clean water
A plan for cleaning wastewater with ultraviolet light won the $15,000 first prize in the annual Big Bang! Business Plan Competition at UC Davis on May 20. The funding will help students complete a prototype of the novel technology, which will be tested first at UC Davis' wastewater treatment facility. [ More… ]

Woodland grads honored with UC Davis scholarships
Fourteen high school seniors from Woodland and Pioneer high schools will begin their freshman year at UC Davis with a scholarship from the UC Davis Foundation's Russell F. and Jean H. Fiddyment Endowed Fund. The Fiddyments' contribution provides each student with a one-time award of $2,000. [ More… ]
Amateur radio training: Introductory meeting, daylong class
UC Davis is hosting an entry-level training class and exam for aspiring amateur radio operators — people who could offer communications assistance during large-scale emergencies. People interested in taking the class should first attend a one-hour introductory meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 2 at the Explorit Science Center's Mace Park branch, 3141 Fifth St., Davis. The class and exam in the UC Davis Emergency Operations Center are scheduled for June 13, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. [ More… ]
In research: Poor attention in kindergarten predicts lower high school test scores
A UC Davis study shows a clear link between attention problems early in school — as early as kindergarten — and lower high school test scores. "In our study, a child's inability to pay attention when they start school had the strongest negative effect on how they performed at the end of high school — regardless of their IQ," said lead author Joshua Breslau, an assistant professor of internal medicine and a researcher with the Center for Reducing Health Disparities.
