UC regents approve UC Davis nursing school

The UC Board of Regents approved the establishment of the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing on March 19. Graduates will serve as educators, researchers and leaders of health care teams that advance patient care and improve quality and access to health care. [ More… ]

UC weighing employee furloughs, pay cuts

Employee furloughs and pay cuts are among the budget measures that the University of California is considering as it grapples with a growing fiscal shortfall. UC is pursuing a range of cost-saving initiatives to cope with the economic contraction, UC officials told the board of regents this week. [ More… ]

On with the show at Mondavi

The Mondavi Center resumed its schedule the night of March 16, after workers finished emergency repairs to Jackson Hall's acoustic canopy. The 20,000-pound canopy, part of the shell that helps create Jackson Hall's widely praised acoustics, became stuck in the down position March 5, forcing a number of performances to be moved, postponed or canceled. In research: Lake Tahoe clarity holds steady

The waters of Lake Tahoe were clear to an average depth of 69.6 feet in 2008, according to UC Davis scientists who have monitored the lake since 1968. That keeps the clarity measurement in the range where it has been for about the past eight years. But last year's measurements also showed the impact of wildfires on the lake. [ More… ]

UC Davis, Sac State team up on stem cell lab training

Graduate students from California State University, Sacramento, will soon be working in UC Davis stem cell laboratories thanks to a grant from the state's stem cell agency, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The $1.3 million "Bridges to Stem Cell Research" grant is intended to strengthen the ranks of laboratory personnel who have experience using the most current stem cell research techniques. [ More… ]

Fellowships available for junior faculty

Junior faculty are invited to apply for fellowships offered by the Hellman Family Foundation. The fellowships provide support for research by promising faculty at the assistant professor rank, and the application deadline is April 13. The range of last year's total awards was $10,000 to $26,000 — the program expects a somewhat similar range this year. It is expected that the 2009-10 fellowship recipients will be announced this June. [ More… ]

New issue of IT Times now available

The latest edition of the IT Times campus tech newsletter, now an electronic publication, was released this week. This issue includes items on cyberinfrastructure, DavisMail, new phisher-blocking tactics and other developments. [ More… ]

Campus to host robotic 'Lunacy'

Forty-four high school teams and their robots are due on campus next week for the high-adrenaline action of the Sacramento Regional FIRST Robotics competition. The competition, free and open to the public, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 27 and 28. This year's game, dubbed "Lunacy," features trailer-towing robots playing on a low-friction floor that mimics some of the low-gravity conditions on the moon. [ More… ]

Deadlines loom for Citations for Excellence and some TGFS activities

Nominations are due by March 31 for this year's Staff Assembly Citations for Excellence. In Thank Goodness for Staff news, registration closes today for the volleyball tournament, and continues through March 27 for tennis. Registration is coming soon for the TGFS golf tournament, fun run-walk and bowling, and signups are being taken now for TGFS Idol — a talent show held during the annual picnic on May 13. [ More… ]

In Out of the Past: A Journey Through the Landscape of Livestock Production writer-producer Cody Sheehy, a program representative in the Department of Plant Sciences, draws on his childhood on Mongolia's grassland steppe and an eastern Oregon cattle ranch.
