Ed DePeters, animal science professor and expert in dairy cow nutrition, has won this year's UC Davis Prize for Undergraduate Teaching and Scholarly Achievement. The $40,000 award is believed to be the largest undergraduate teaching prize of its kind in the nation. [ More… ]

UC Day: University viewed as a jobs engine, smart investment

UC President Mark G. Yudof this week brought together four professors, including two from UC Davis, to tell what they are doing to enhance the quality of life in California and to help bring recovery from the global economic meltdown. The forum was part of UC Day at the Capitol, the university's annual effort to build and maintain support in the halls of state government. [ More… ]

Campus honors Vanderhoef with scholarship fund, Patti LuPone concert in May and open house in June

UC Davis is offering its best wishes to Larry Vanderhoef as he steps down from the chancellor's post after 15 years of service — with a scholarship fund for staff and students, and an open house at the chancellor's residence. The campus community is also invited to a concert May 30 by Broadway superstar Patti LuPone at the Mondavi Center. [ More… ]

Yolo County files charges in January search that police say yielded explosives in dorm

Eric Calman, accused of possession of explosives in Imperial County, is now facing similar charges in Yolo County — in connection with the discovery of unspecified materials in his UC Davis residence hall in January. It was his arrest in Imperial County that led to the search of his dorm room. Calman was last enrolled in fall quarter. [ More… ]

Fun is one part of TGFS; volunteering is another

Thank Goodness for Staff offers plenty of opportunities to have fun and plenty of opportunities to help with the organizing. Registration for the TGFS volleyball tournament is scheduled from March 16 to 20. And if you want to help, organizers are looking for volunteers for several coordinating positions as well as helpers on the day of the picnic — May 13. [ More… ]

With summer approaching, it's time to think about activities for your children

For children's activities this summer, Campus Recreation is offering everything you would expect and more — including a new camp called Kids, Farms & Food. Registration for summer youth programs begins March 21, and you can learn more about the programs at a special activities fair at the Davis Farmers Market Saturday, March 14, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. [ More… ]

Mondavi Center struggles with acoustic canopy

Problems with the acoustic canopy over the Mondavi Center's main stage forced the move of three concerts to other campus venues March 8-11, and also is interrupting this weekend's schedule. Workers have successfully raised the canopy to its proper position but are still making structural adjustments. Tonight's Grupo Corpo performance has been rescheduled, and there was no word yet on the weekend's other two Jackson Hall performances. [ More… ]

Good vibrations: Team IDs stem cells that could reverse hearing loss

A UC Davis Health System study raises hope of some day reversing the hearing loss that results from the death of thousands of minute hair cells that line the inner ear and pick up vibrations from sound. The new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, showed that stem cells from the lateral ventricle area of the brain can be coaxed into replicating the sound-sensing function. Start your Saturday with the UC Davis student firefighters' annual Pancake Breakfast, benefiting the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Then, make your way from the firehouse to the Arboretum Teaching Nursery and the first plant sale of the season. British performance duo Lone Twin document 30 days in the life of UC Davis and the Davis community, in a UC Davis Centennial event titled To the Century. Every day, the pair will ride their bikes around Davis and the surrounding area, observing and collecting stories about the community, and every day at 5:30 p.m. they will present a free, live performance piece.
