UC awards honorary degrees to WWII-era Japanese Americans
UC announced last week that it would award honorary degrees to about 400 former UC students of Japanese descent who were interned during World War II. The Board of Regents voted to make an exception to a long-standing policy against honorary degrees to make amends to aging Japanese Americans whose educations were cut short decades ago — including some who had attended UC Davis. Campus bicycle fees going up Aug. 1
The campus bicycle registration fee and renewal fee are going up effective Aug. 1, to $10 (up from $8) for new licenses and $5 (up from $4) for renewals. Registration is required for all bicycles operated on the UC Davis campus; licenses are available at the TAPS office during regular business hours. [ More… ]

Mistaken identity? Alzheimer's plaques and bacteria trigger same immune response
In a study published this week, UC Davis researchers report that both amyloid plaques found in the brains of Alzheimer's patients and structures made by some gut bacteria likely elicit the same response from human immune cells, creating inflammation that destroys neurons. [ More… ]

Cryptologist talks about codes and code-breaking to youngsters

David Perry, a cryptologic mathematician with the National Security Agency, will give a public talk about the history of codes and code-breaking and especially the "unbreakable" Enigma code machine used by Germany in World War II. Perry's talk is part of Mathfest 2009, an evening for high-schoolers and their parents celebrating math and its role in everyday life. [ More… ]
