Budget update: Campus to reduce freshman enrollment; King Hall construction suspended
UC Davis will reduce its fall admission target for new freshmen by nearly 400 students, as part of a systemwide action. The Board of Regents also approved President Mark G. Yudof's proposal to freeze senior management salaries. The campus has also suspended work on the renovation of King Hall, home of the UC Davis School of Law, following a decision by the California Pooled Money Investment Board to freeze disbursements for state funded capital projects. When state funding is restored, construction can resume. [ More… ]
Food workers join employee ranks in 2009
Almost 200 food-service workers and about 400 student employees will receive their first UC Davis paychecks this month after making the transition from Sodexo to university employment. Their move to direct university employment on Jan. 2 makes good on the campus's commitment last April to adopt a new approach to managing its food service and to assume the role of employer for nonmanagement workers. UC Davis police investigate threats against animal researchers, urge caution with mail
An animal rights group has claimed that it has sent letter bombs to two UC Davis researchers. The UC Davis Police Department, Davis Police Department and other agencies are investigating the claim, and no suspicious packages have been detected. All campus researchers, faculty and staff are advised to be vigilant in handling and opening mail, and anyone finding a suspect package should contact the UC Davis Police Department immediately. Big boost for energy efficiency
Chevron Corp. has given UC Davis $2.5 million to endow a chair to lead the campus's Energy Efficiency Center, the world's first university center of excellence in energy efficiency. Established in 2006, the center's primary objective is to speed the transfer of energy-saving products and services into the homes, businesses and lives of Californians. [ More… ]
Better brand marketing: New licensing agreement to maximize UC Davis presence
You will soon see more of UC Davis around town — and beyond. The university has contracted with The Collegiate Licensing Company to manage the licensing of its trademark and expand both the variety and market reach of its branded products. The partnership could license a variety of new items — from pet supplies to wine accessories — and help put UC Davis products in nationally known stores and airport shops around the country. Family law professors file Proposition 8 amicus brief
Even if the California Supreme Court upholds California's ban on gay marriage, same-sex couples who tied the knot before November 2008 will remain legally married, family law scholars argue in a friend-of-the-court brief submitted Jan. 15. The brief was signed by 28 family law professors from 15 California law schools, including UC Davis, and submitted by UC Davis law professor Courtney Joslin and Michael Wald of Stanford. [ More… ]

Student Employee of the Year nominations
Nominations are due today (Jan. 16) for the Student Employee of the Year Award. Eligible students must be undergraduates who have been awarded Work-Study, have been employed for a minimum of six months prior to July 1, 2008, and have worked at least 10 hours per week.
