Campus will close for 11 furlough days
UC Davis officials today announced further budget cuts to close the budget gap and set out a plan for furloughs for most UC Davis employees. The UC Davis campus will close on 11 noninstructional days in the coming year, concentrated during winter and spring breaks and before the start of the summer quarter. [ More… ]
Millions in stimulus funds awarded to UC Davis
In a year that's held little good news for budget planners, a steady stream of grants from federal stimulus funds is providing a much-needed cushion for research programs. UC Davis faculty have garnered 88 research grants totaling nearly $32.6 million. Unitrans is receiving nearly $5 million from the stimulus program to purchase 11 new fuel-efficient, natural-gas buses, and students will benefit from a boost to Pell grants. [ More… ]
Campus shifts administrative resources
The campus is likely to decide in September on a broad reorganization of its key administrative support functions, creating a single administrative division for all the municipal-like campus services that support the campus's academic and research mission, including business and finance, planning and infrastructure, safety and health, and human resources functions. Active shooter training classes offered
The UC Davis Police Department will hold two training classes next week on how to respond during a shooting incident. The classes will be held on Sept. 1 and 2 from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Emergency Operations Center opposite Hutchison Field. The classes are primarily intended for volunteers taking part in the major police, fire and emergency management exercise on Sept. 16. Women are sort of more tentative than men, aren't they?
Women hedge, issue disclaimers and ask questions when they communicate, language features that can suggest uncertainty, lack of confidence and low status. But men do the same, according to new research from UC Davis. "It's a stereotype that men are direct while women are tentative. I debunk that stereotype," said Nicholas Palomares, assistant professor of communication. [ More… ]
Online language classes work, research shows
Online foreign-language classes can be as effective as classroom instruction, according to research from the UC Consortium for Language Learning and Teaching. "Distance learning of a foreign language can be a responsible and equivalent option to the classroom experience," said consortium director Robert Blake, a professor of Spanish at UC Davis. [ More… ]
