New GSM dean is 'academic entrepreneur'
Steven Currall, a vice dean and faculty member who holds joint positions at University College London and the London Business School, has been appointed dean of the UC Davis Graduate School of Management. Currall, selected following an international search, will begin work July 1. [ More… ]
UC gets stimulus funding
The UC system is receiving $268 million in federal stimulus money, but all but $13 million of this amount is already included in the 2009-10 budget — which means the UC system is still short at least $437 million, down from $450 million. UC President Mark G. Yudof said the federal money "has taken some of the burden off the shoulders of the state government for the coming year, preventing what otherwise would have been even deeper budget cuts for California public education." Bright lights: English, evolution profs named Guggenheim fellows
Two UC Davis faculty members and one professor emeritus have been awarded prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships. Frances Dolan, professor of English, Artyom Kopp, assistant professor of evolution and ecology, and Lynn Hershman Leeson, professor emeritus of technocultural studies, are among the 180 artists, scientists and scholars recognized for stellar achievement and exceptional promise by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Aggie teams receive academic honors from NCAA
The NCAA announced on Wednesday that two UC Davis teams — men's water polo and women's tennis — have been honored with public recognition awards for Academic Progress Rate success, each of them earning the distinction for the second consecutive year. The award is given to teams that post multiyear APR scores in the top 10 percent of all teams in their sport. [ More… ]
Meeting on campus wireless, high-speed networking
A special public meeting on April 28 will review options for expanding wireless coverage on campus, providing high-speed connections, and determining a rate structure for network use. The meeting is scheduled from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 1065 Kemper Hall. It is sponsored by the Campus Council for Information Technology and is open to all. [ More… ]
In research: Superfast, ultra energy-efficient chip
UC Davis researchers have designed a new, extremely energy-efficient processor chip that provides breakthrough speeds for a variety of computing tasks. The chip, dubbed AsAP, is ultrasmall, fully reprogrammable and highly configurable, so it can be widely adapted to a number of applications. [ More… ]
Healthy 'til 100: Take the Wellness Challenge
UC Davis wants all its employees — those who are working and those who are retired — to stay "Healthy 'til 100" and beyond. To help accomplish this, the Retiree Center is presenting a Wellness Challenge and a speakers series. The Wellness Challenge, which runs May 1 through Aug. 15, asks people to make at least one healthy lifestyle change for 100 days — and one participant will win passes to the campus Activities and Recreation Center. Undergraduates take the stage at research conference

UC Davis undergraduates will present their work tomorrow at the 20th annual Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creative Activities Conference. Oral presentations are from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Wellman Hall, followed by poster presentations from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Freeborn Hall. Admission is free and open to the public. [ More… ]
