Painter and poet: Top UC Davis honors go to Thiebaud and Snyder

Poet Gary Snyder and painter Wayne Thiebaud, whose art defied convention and defined an era, have been awarded the UC Davis Medal, the highest tribute bestowed by the university. Snyder, a professor emeritus of English at UC Davis, and Thiebaud, a professor emeritus of art, received the honor in a ceremony Tuesday evening. [ More… ]

Report: Student drinking on the decline

Fewer UC Davis students are engaging in high-risk drinking, according to a report on a major local effort. Over the last four years, the UC Davis Safe Party Initiative has shown students how to reduce alcohol-related risks at parties, fostered better relationships among students and their neighbors, and increased the visibility of law enforcement related to alcohol use. Mountain lion! Do you run or stand your ground?

A UC Davis study of 110 years of mountain lion attacks on people suggests the conventional wisdom of standing your ground may not always be the right course. "Even though we found evidence that pumas will indeed chase, and capture, people who run, we also found that people who stand still are possibly more endangered," said the study's lead author, psychology professor Richard Coss. Honoring 'the original inhabitants of this land'

Along the arboretum waterway near King Hall, a new reflective area is taking shape — a place where you can remember and honor the American Indians who came before us on the land that became UC Davis. This first phase of the "Project to Honor Native Americans — The Original Inhabitants of This Land" is due for completion this summer, with a dedication ceremony planned in September. [ More… ]

Recreation Pool will open for the season on April 25; campus radio KDVS 90.3 FM will hold its annual on-air fundraiser April 20-26; police and bomb-sniffing dogs found no explosives after a telephone threat to the UC Davis Cancer Center on April 13; the campus Fire Department successfully completed a training drill Wednesday, setting fire to a vacant house on campus property; the ARC is celebrating its fifth anniversary and the UC Davis Centennial with an exhibit this weekend, 100 Years of Recreation at UC Davis. ASUCD-Davis community blood drive

Please consider donating blood during the upcoming blood drive on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 28 and 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Freeborn Hall. Everyone who donates will receive a T-shirt. [ More… ]

Parking citation fine increase

Effective May 1, the fine for parking violations on the UC Davis campus will increase by $10 — from $30 to $40 for the majority of parking violations. [ More… ]

Hand-held torch replacement

This directive updates campus policies related to hand-held gas cylinder and torch nozzle units. Certain types of torches are being discontinued and replaced with new units. [ More… ]
