UC president spells out vision for chancellor, meets with faculty and staff

UC President Mark G. Yudof began his search for a new UC Davis chancellor last week by visiting the campus, where he convened an advisory committee and invited representatives of various interest groups to share their thoughts about new campus leadership. He also shared his impressions of the campus with reporters and talked about the kind of academic background and leadership qualities he wants to see in the campus's next chancellor. [ More… ]

Research funds top a half-billion dollars for fourth year

UC Davis received a record $586,181,880 in research funds for the 2007-8 fiscal year that ended June 30, the fourth consecutive year that research funding exceeded the half-billion-dollar mark. This figure represents an increase of $54 million, or 10 percent over the previous year's figure. [ More… ]

Don't wear it out: Scrubs, linen add up in supply costs

The sight is common and, for most, no cause for alarm: At the supermarket, the gas station, the fast-food restaurant and scores of other public places, people are dressed in scrubs, revealing their place of employment to be a hospital or other health-care setting. But UC Davis Health System officials say that wearing university-issued scrubs outside the workplace drives up costs in the long run. [ More… ]

Troublesome, non-native tree squirrels will get birth-control shots

UC Davis wildlife experts are launching a research program to curb a campus population explosion of non-native fox squirrels. Initially, squirrels will simply be caught, marked and immediately released. Next summer, they'll get contraceptive hormone injections. Expect to see canvas-covered wire traps around campus soon. News tips from TAPS: We've got winners! new bike lockers, garage lights

Transportation and Parking Services earlier this week picked the winning names in a drawing for free tickets to the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame's dinner and induction ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 2. Also, TAPS is planning to install bicycle lockers outside of Mrak Hall, and these rental units, like others across campus, will be available to faculty, staff and students. And the lighting demonstration project in the North Entry Parking Garage, which combines low-energy lights and motion detectors to save electricity and improve safety, is going permanent, and workers are retrofitting the entire garage. Prof explores Thailand, politics of death

Whether ghosts, death or politics, Alan Klima says things are not always what they appear to be in Thailand. An anthropology professor who studies the relationship between Buddhism, death and politics, Klima returned last week from a few months in Thailand where he was researching ghost stories and economic issues at a critical moment in the country's history. In research: Collective bragging can betray insecurity

From partisans at a political rally to fans at a football game, groups that engage in pompous displays of collective pride may be trying to mask insecurity and a low social status, suggests new research led by UC Davis psychologists. Cynthia Pickett, associate professor of psychology, and her co-investigators found that groups that boast, gloat and denigrate outsiders tend to be of low social status or vulnerable to threats from other groups.
