UC regents warn freshman enrollments may be curtailed
The UC Board of Regents approved a 2009-10 budget proposal for the university yesterday. They also adopted a resolution stating that UC freshman enrollments next fall will be curtailed if the state does not provide sufficient funding. The regents clarified that the budget does not call for student fee increases but that fee increases will be necessary if the state does not provide sufficient funding to the university. [ More… ]
Budget planning intensifies: Campus leaders to prepare for midyear cuts, 'systemic change'
As UC Davis deals with possible midyear budget cuts for 2008-09, the state's deepening fiscal hole is prompting campus leaders to take a new budget tack for 2009-10. Interim Provost Barbara Horwitz is establishing a Budget Advisory Committee and five subcommittees "to guide budget planning and to recommend specific changes to university business processes." New dean tapped for engineering
Bruce R. White, a professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering and the interim vice provost for academic personnel at UC Davis, will become dean of the College of Engineering for a three-year appointment that begins Jan. 1, 2009. White will fill the role while the college's current dean, Enrique Lavernia, serves as the campus's provost and executive vice chancellor. [ More… ]
In research: Women's gains in politics not seen in board rooms, CEO offices
Half of California's 400 largest public companies have no women in top executive offices, according to a study released Monday by UC Davis researchers. Almost half do not have a woman on the board of directors. Nearly a third — including household names McAfee, Quicksilver and Hansen Natural — do not have a woman in either a top executive post or on the governing board. [ More… ]
Free flu clinic shows campus how to prepare for emergencies
UC Davis will offer free influenza vaccinations on Wednesday, Dec. 3, to test its ability to quickly dispense medication in a public health emergency. The clinic, to be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Freeborn Hall, will provide up to 1,300 vaccinations for members of the campus community aged 18 and up. [ More… ]
UC Davis law professor joins Obama team
Cruz Reynoso, professor emeritus of law, has been appointed to President-elect Barack Obama's Justice and Civil Rights Agency Review Team. Reynoso will help lead a review of key federal departments, agencies and commissions, as well as the White House. The review will provide the Obama-Biden Transition Team with information needed to make policy, budgetary and personnel decisions prior to Obama's Jan. 20 inauguration. [ More… ]
Campus police adopt new lost-and-found policy
The UC Davis Police Department, which serves as the lost and found for the Davis and Sacramento campuses, is changing policy to restrict the items that it will take in. Effective Dec. 1, the department will accept only specific items listed on its Web site; among those no longer accepted will be car keys, books and clothing. [ More… ]
Red Cross honors heroes on campus
Under a halo of bright lights, students ran and jumped and sweated at play in their intramural games and club practices on the sports fields at UC Davis. Then one man's heart stopped. How two women responded helped save the 27-year-old's life and underscores the importance of first-aid training. Lara Musser, a student and employee of Campus Recreation, and Laura Rombach, a 2007 graduate of UC Davis, will be among those honored at the American Red Cross of Yolo County's annual Heroes Luncheon at Freeborn Hall on Dec. 4. Holoman's final concert with the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra's 50th anniversary golden jubilee gala will also mark conductor D. Kern Holoman's last performance with the group. The music professor, who holds the Barbara K. Jackson Chair in Orchestral Conducting, plans to retire as conductor in June after 30 years. [ More… ]
World AIDS Day pledge drive begins next week

Student interns of Health Education and Promotion are running the awareness pledge drive. The campus will observe World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 with a march around the Quad at 11:30 a.m. followed by a rally at noon on the south side of the Memorial Union.
