Governor's midyear cuts include new reduction for UC
Midyear state budget cuts proposed by Gov. Schwarzenegger Nov. 6 include a further $65.5 million budget cut for the University of California in the current fiscal year. This cut would come on top of the $48 million year-over-year reduction for UC that was included in the final 2008-09 budget. [ More… ]
Enrollment records set for 2008-09
Almost 100 years ago, the first class of 28 degree-seeking students began their studies at what became UC Davis. And now, as UC Davis celebrates its centennial, the university boasts its strongest freshman class and overall record enrollment of 31,426. Oiled-bird rescue unit wants 'best' to be better
One year after leading the second-largest rescue and rehabilitation of oiled seabirds in recent California history, UC Davis wildlife health experts are busy preparing for the next major oil spill. When the container ship Cosco Busan spilled more than 53,000 gallons of fuel oil into San Francisco Bay, UC Davis' Oiled Wildlife Care Network used research-based medicine to save the lives of hundreds of animals that otherwise would have died. Street renaming honors UC ag pioneer
The campus has changed the name of a street to honor Eugene W. Hilgard, dean of the College of Agriculture at Berkeley from 1875 to 1905 and founder of the university's Agricultural Experiment Station. Hilgard Lane is the new name of what used to be Beau Vine Lane, the street that fronts the new Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science. [ More… ]

Two big-name singers, Willie Nelson and k.d. lang, are coming to the Mondavi Center in early 2009. Tickets are due to go on sale on three different dates — dates that are different than those published in Dateline (because the dates were changed after Dateline went to press). Holiday office closures and union notice
This year, the seasonal administrative holidays fall on Wednesday, Dec. 24; Thursday, Dec. 25; Wednesday, Dec. 31; and Thursday, Jan. 1. Winter quarter begins on Friday, Jan. 2. As in previous years, unit heads who wish to close their offices or reduce office hours on days surrounding the holiday dates may do so, with the approval of their dean or vice chancellor. [ More… ]

Raptor center hosts open house and Hawk Walk

The California Raptor Center's open house begins at 8 a.m. with a Hawk Walk along Putah Creek. It continues at the center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., when visitors can see live raptors and demonstrations. The raptor center, a program of the School of Veterinary Medicine, provides care for injured raptors with the goal of releasing them back to the wild. [ More… ]
