Campus fiscal woes ease a bit
In his May budget revision, Gov. Schwarzenegger offered the UC system an additional $98.5 million, bringing his total proposed allocation to the same as 2007-08, about $3.26 billion. That means nothing extra for price increases for the same amount of goods and services, nothing extra for enrollment growth, nothing extra for pay raises, nothing for new initiatives. "We're still underfunded to meet our base operating costs," said Kelly Ratliff, associate vice chancellor for budgeting. [ More… ]
Robert Mondavi: 'A magnificent man of compelling vision'
Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef offers up a tribute to UC Davis benefactor Robert Mondavi, who died on May 16 at age 94. "What I will treasure most about our friendship with Bob Mondavi was his sense of destiny," the chancellor says in the opinion piece, which the San Francisco Chronicle published on May 19. [ More… ]
One-way traffic at California-La Rue intersection
Construction crews have returned to the intersection of California Avenue and La Rue Road, bringing one-way traffic control and possible delays from now through mid-July, or possibly into the first part of August. The project, just north of the California Avenue bridge over the arboretum waterway, is a continuation of one that began more than a year ago. The job involves extending steam and chilled-water pipelines to new buildings. The alternative route is Highway 113 and the Hutchison Drive exit. [ More… ]
Theater-dance and music to stage Oklahoma! as UC Davis Centennial event
The Department of Theatre and Dance and the Department of Music announced a joint production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! as a special event in May 2009 during the UC Davis Centennial. Five performances are scheduled in Jackson Hall at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, with music by the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Moschler, Master of Arts candidate in conducting. A 'selfless personality': Botanical Conservatory director retiring
Tim Metcalf, longtime director of the UC Davis Botanical Conservatory, retires June 30. In his four decades at the conservatory, Metcalf, perhaps best known for his celebration of the stinky "corpse flower," has turned a small plant collection into a vibrant resource for classroom teaching, student projects and internships, and public education. A public celebration in his honor is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. June 6 at the conservatory. [ More… ]
Big Bang! High-tech wine cap design wins $15,000
A design for a high-tech stopper for wine bottles that would allow the wine to breathe much like traditional bark corks won the $15,000 first prize in the campus's annual Big Bang! Business Plan Competition. The competition, founded in 2000 by students in the Graduate School of Management, is designed to reward innovation at UC Davis and encourage entrepreneurship in the region at large. [ More… ]
Grapes vs. Grain: New book weighs merits of wine and beer
Torn between two beverage loves? You're not alone. Charles Bamforth, head of the UC Davis brewing program, has long been a devotee of beers but also somewhat of a grudging admirer of wines and the mystique they evoke. And so he has written about both sides of the beverage world. In his new book "Grape vs. Grain: A Historical, Technological and Social Comparison of Wine and Beer," Bamforth weighs the merits of both types of beverages. [ More… ]
