'What can we stop doing?' Provost reaches out to campus for budget help
Barbara Horwitz, interim provost and executive vice chancellor, has met with more than 500 UC Davis staff and faculty in many meetings to spread the word about the seriousness and immediacy of the university's financial problems. All politics are still local: Iraqi war casualties and elections
War casualties in Iraq may play an important role in the presidential election this fall, suggests new research by political science professor Scott Sigmund Gartner. The study, conducted by Gartner and Gary Segura, a political science professor at Stanford, reveals that senators from states that suffered a disproportionate number of casualties in the weeks before the 2006 midterm elections were punished at the polls. The new Aggie cruiser: Pedaling your school colors
Two young entrepreneurs are betting that there will be a lot more blue and gold in that sea of bikes that covers the sprawling UC Davis campus. They've introduced a newly licensed cruiser, complete with Aggie colors and logo, which pays the university royalties for every bike sold. [ More… ]
Photos and ceramic tiles help bridge art and science
The Spring quarter saw the introduction of photography to the university's Art-Science Fusion Program, along with the continuation of ceramic mosaic tiling. The photos (from Science and Society 40, with land, air and water resources professor Terry Nathan as instructor) are on display from now through June 27 at the Buehler Alumni and Visitors Center. The high cost of declining ag research dollars
Agricultural economist Julian Alston is one of three authors of a new study that shows a decline in California's agricultural productivity at the same time that U.S. public funding of agricultural research has declined. The nation's historical commitment to ag research and development "has helped farmers provide Americans with a dependable, wholesome and reasonably priced food supply for many decades," Alston said. "A renewed commitment ... could restore farm productivity growth and avert a continuing decline in California's international competitiveness." [ More… ]

Wireless telephone laws and university guidelines on the use of hands-free devices
California's new wireless telephone laws go into effect on July 1. The new law prohibits all drivers from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. The law exempts emergency personnel as well as any emergency calls to a law enforcement agency, medical provider, fire department or other emergency services agency. [ More… ]

The Putah Creek Council announced that its CreekSpeak guest this month will be UC Davis professor emeritus Jack D. Forbes, reading "Yololandia: Memories from the Patwin Plains," and other samples of his poetry and writings that explore the Native American experience in California.
