UC President Yudof comments on potential state pay cuts

UC's new president writes in a letter released late Thursday: "We will make every effort to ensure that employee salaries will continue to be paid at current levels and that all labor contracts will be honored until an agreement is reached on a state budget." Read the entire letter here. [ More… ]

UC Davis shares in $12.3 million grant for large-scale 'carbon farm' in delta

UC Davis is joining federal and state agencies in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta for expanded research into "carbon-capture" farming — a process of trapping carbon dioxide and rebuilding the soil base. The project aims to keep greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere, while at the same time easing pressure on the delta's aging levee system. [ More… ]

UC study: November ballot measure would drive egg production out of state

A new study by the UC Agricultural Issues Center forecasts that "the most likely outcome" of a November ballot initiative, Proposition 2, "is the elimination of almost all of the California egg industry over a very few years." The proposal would ban the use of cages in California's egg industry by 2015. UC Davis professors Daniel Sumner and Joy Mench co-authored the study, which found that the state's egg industry would be severely reduced as costs of production rise, and that more eggs would be shipped in from other states. Beware of new 'phishing' scam that fakes UC Davis e-mail identity

Information and Educational Technology has issued an alert about a new phishing scam — this one warning campus e-mail users that their e-mail accounts will be shut down if they fail to provide log-in IDs and passwords. The message does not come from UC Davis, so do not fall for this fraud, IET officials said. [ More… ]

Kick the paper habit: 'Surepay' switches to online statements

About 24,000 UC Davis employees who have their earnings deposited directly to bank accounts will soon be trading paper statements for online access to pay statements. The change — expected to save the university tens of thousands of dollars and designed to support goals for sustainability — will affect employees at the Davis and Sacramento campuses and other facilities who use the direct-deposit service. Look for a formal e-mail announcement next week. [ More… ]

Nominations and volunteers are welcome from the campus and Davis communities. [ More… ]

Hundreds sign up to help at the state fair; more still needed

Hundreds of UC Davis employees and students have signed up to serve as volunteer campus ambassadors in the university's centennial pavilion at the state fair, and more are still needed. Today the count stands at 172, not including dozens who have signed up through seven campus units that have "adopted" entire days in the pavilion. [ More… ]

Fire department to test hydrants

The fire department has scheduled its annual flow tests for the campus's estimated 220 fire hydrants for Aug. 4, 6 and 7 between 1 and 5 p.m. The testing will involve running multiple hydrants simultaneously to simulate the water demand expected during a major fire, to confirm water pressure and volume.
