Campus makes push to minimize energy consumption over the holidays
Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Barbara Horwitz issued a letter Dec. 18 to alert the campus community to steps that Facilities Management personnel will take over the holidays to reduce utility use, and to ask employees to do their part to cut campus energy use over the holidays. [ More… ]
Online W-2 forms available again this year
Payroll Services announced that W-2 tax statements will again be available online via At Your Service. If you previously elected to receive an online W-2, the "opt-in" election remains in force; it is not necessary to make a new election. If you wish to change the way you get your W-2, you have until Dec. 31 to do so. [ More… ]
In research: Quiet bison sire more calves than louder rivals
During bison mating season, the quietest bulls score the most mates and sire the most offspring, while studs with the loudest bellows see the least action, according to a surprising new study by researchers at UC Davis and Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego. The researchers also found that the volume of a bull's bellow was not related to the animal's weight or age. [ More… ]
Silo café changes name to Gunrock Pub and adds campus flavor
The only full-service restaurant on the Davis campus is getting a makeover, a new name and a big helping of UC Davis flavor. Look for the Silo Café & Pub to reopen Jan. 5 as the Gunrock Pub. The new restaurant will showcase campus-produced foods and local specialties. Sodexo plans a weeklong grand opening celebration Jan. 5-9, with free dessert for all diners. [ More… ]
Arboretum puts out call for volunteers
The UC Davis Arboretum is taking sign-ups for volunteer training, with sessions scheduled in January and February. Suzanne Ullensvang, resource development manager, said the arboretum welcomes people of all skill levels. "We need people with enthusiasm and a positive attitude," she said. Last-minute shopping solution: UC Davis Centennial olive oil
The Olive Center is offering a "last-minute holiday shopping solution": bottles of UC Davis Centennial Blend Olive Oil, each packed in excelsior straw in a box with a red ribbon. The 500-milliliter bottles are available at the Davis and Sacramento campus bookstores for $29. [ More… ]
$6.8 million grant to speed development of new wheat varieties
Thanks to a three-year, $6.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation, UC Davis researchers are working on a groundbreaking plant genome project that could speed up the development of wheat varieties with improved grain quality and nutrition, higher yield, resistance to pests and diseases, and tolerance of adverse climate conditions. Aggies on the Move: Barking Dogs capture Team Challenge
The UC Davis walking program's fall quarter Team Challenge concluded with first place going to the Barking Dogs (the Lantz-Johnson family: husband-wife Bob and Katy Lantz and their sister-in-law Deanna Johnson). Over eight weeks, they averaged 1,089,390 steps each — more than 100 miles. [ More… ]

The Mondavi Center's winter quarter Focus on Film, Hitchcock — The Wrong Man Theme, starts Jan. 5 with Spellbound. The other films in the Hitchcock series are North by Northwest (Jan. 26) and Strangers on a Train (Feb. 23).
