'Fido Fights Cancer': UC Davis research featured on PBS science show

Study estimates costs of military protection for Persian Gulf oil

A UC Davis transportation expert has produced a better estimate of the dollar amount spent on U.S. military activities to ensure a reliable flow of oil from the Persian Gulf to American cars and trucks. Mark Delucchi of the Institute of Transportation Studies established that American taxpayers spent between $27 billion and $73 billion in 2004 (the most recent year with data available) on military protection of our oil interests in the Persian Gulf region. UC Davis Cancer Center to study breast-cancer vaccine

Researchers at the UC Davis Cancer Center are launching a study of a new, experimental vaccine to determine if it can arrest or prevent breast cancer. Existing cancer vaccines for hepatitis B and the human papillomavirus aim to prevent the viral infections that can lead to liver and cervical cancers. But the experimental breast-cancer vaccine aims to stimulate the immune response against breast cancer tumors themselves. [ More… ]

Central Campus projects undergo environmental review

Public comment is being sought on the university's environmental review of four proposed construction projects on the Davis Campus: the Segundo Services Center, Student Community Center, Music Instruction and Recital Building, and Chilled Water Phase 7. Staff Assembly hosts UC Davis day with the Sacramento Kings

UC Davis staff members are invited to be Kings for a Day — at a Sacramento Kings game. The group outing is set for Jan. 11, when the Kings are scheduled to take on the Dallas Mavericks in a 6 p.m. game at Arco Arena. Staff Assembly is selling tickets for $25.50, and the last day to buy them is Dec. 19. [ More… ]

Campus introduces first director of parent programs

Tess Chandler, who earned an undergraduate degree one course at a time while raising three sons, will help foster closer connections between UC Davis and the parents of its students. Chandler has worked in the UC Davis alumni office and other campus units for more than 10 years and has been appointed the university's first director of parent programs. [ More… ]

Craft Center offers 10 percent discount to faculty and staff

As a special incentive for faculty and staff, the Craft Center is offering an online coupon good for a 10 percent discount on any class this winter quarter. The Craft Center offers more than 90 classes each quarter — ranging from one-day workshops to seven-week courses — in ceramics, woodworking, photography, glass, flame working, jewelry, screen printing, welding, textiles, and arts and crafts. Campus Unions to offer youth bowling camp

The Winter Bowling Camp, Dec. 29 through Jan. 2, gives kids ages 8 to 14 a chance to spend their winter break out of the rain and cold while learning a fun new sport. The cost for the four-day camp is $80 for university affiliates. [ More… ]
