Provost OKs budget cuts for 2008-09
Interim Provost Barbara Horwitz this week instructed administrators to proceed with most of their proposed spending cutbacks for 2008-09 and cautioned that more may be needed. "There is still substantial uncertainty about additional state cuts, and the financial picture may worsen," Horwitz said. [ More… ]
UC responds to governor's executive order on state pay
In response to Gov. Schwarzenegger's Executive Order S-09-08 signed July 31, UC Provost and Executive Vice President Wyatt R. Hume said in a statement that UC "will continue to make every effort to ensure that employee salaries will be paid at the current levels and that all current labor contracts will be honored until an agreement is reached on a state budget." Need to reset your Kerberos password? IET adds locations
Starting Aug. 18, the password reset service, now available only in 182 Shields Library, will be offered during more of the day at several open-access computer labs spread across campus. This expansion will let Information and Educational Technology close 182 Shields as a walk-in location for the IT Express computing services help desk by Aug. 15. The site will reopen as an open-access computer lab in the fall. [ More… ]
Looking forward: Smart contact lenses
"Smart" contact lenses that measure pressure within the eye and dispense medication accordingly could be made possible using a new material developed by biomedical engineers at UC Davis. The researchers plan to apply for approval to begin trials of the lenses in humans. [ More… ]
UC president touts accountability
UC will launch an accountability program to provide better information about the university's performance to the public and policymakers. President Mark Yudof intends to deliver an annual accountability report to the UC regents and the public. The report will provide data on the university's performance in a wide variety of areas, from affordability and diversity to research success and graduation rates. [ More… ]
Biologist turns glass into animal art in off-hours
Exotic and endangered species are of special interest to Olga Barmina as a biologist and as an artist. For the former, she is a staff research associate in the Section of Evolution and Ecology, where she studies the mechanisms of animal development. For the latter, she uses finely ground glass to depict such species as the Bengal tiger. [ More… ]

In research: Fragile X discovery
MIND Institute researchers say chromosomes are shortened at the tips in male carriers of the fragile X syndrome, when compared with chromosomes in men the same age. The finding may help to explain why these carriers sometimes develop fragile X-associated tremor-ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) that causes tremor and balance problems in addition to Alzheimer's-like symptoms later in life.
