The Buckhorn Steak & Roadhouse in Winters will be serving up its famous tri-tip sandwiches (plus veggie burgers) at this year's annual Thank Goodness for Staff Picnic. Library, bookstore plan a celebration of campus authors
The UC Davis General Library and bookstore are hosting an authors event April 29 to celebrate the recent publication of more than 100 books by faculty members and academic appointees. Books will be on display from 4 to 6 p.m. in the lobby of Shields Library, and 13 of the authors will speak during a program starting at 4:15, with a reception to follow. UC Davis' plug-in hybrid program featured on NOVA
Professor Andy Frank, the inventor of the plug-in hybrid electric car, was featured this week in an entertaining, informative NOVA documentary, "Car of the Future," that aired on PBS. The program included a segment (Chapter 5, "Plugging In") on Frank and his shop, where he has been developing and improving his concept for 20 years. The entire program can be viewed online. Communication breakdown: Why men think 'yes' when women say 'no'
According to new research by communication professor Michael Motley, faulty male introspection may be to blame for why men often misinterpret women's indirect messages. Motley says that "when she says 'It's getting late,' he may hear 'So let's skip the preliminaries ... and the only reason he can imagine saying 'It's getting late' while making out is to mean 'Let's speed things up.'" Dog blood donors still needed for veterinary blood bank
The new UC Davis Veterinary Blood Bank is still in need of dogs from the surrounding area to serve as blood donors, and it's encouraging pet owners to consider enrolling their dogs. The blood bank collects canine blood needed for transfusions to treat a variety of conditions in dogs ranging from surgical complications to kidney failure. [ More… ]
